I forgot that Maher was our starter at both kicker & punter. Dude should have a strong intellectual knowledge of basically every special teams aspect - hopefully he can coach it well.

If he didn’t play for us, would we be excited about it? That’s always my barometer for hires like this.

The answer, by the way, is “no.”

But with assistant coach hires, 85% of the time it’s someone we’ve never heard of. So I don’t know if us being excited upon hearing the news is a very good barometer.

Maybe not all his philosophies. If Barney takes one more kickoff out of the end zone and returns it to the 16 they should bench him in that role forever.

I don’t even know why Barney is returning kicks to be honest. Punts are his thing and he’s good at it. Kickoff return is a different skill. Requires vision. Barney’s skill is reacting quicker than most people.

LOVE this from a specialist standpoint. My only concern is - does an NFL kicker have the mindset of a lunatic like Ek had? So much of this role is instilling a DNA into the entire team by valuing the little things. That doesn't mean the lunatic route is the only route - but it's the only one we've seen work
