I’d honestly argue that Ty Robinson in 23 and 24 makes us believe any DC we had at the time was elite.

Ty was such a monster his last 2 years. Constantly faced double teams and still beat them in pass rush or held them up in run D. Between him and Nash it effectively allowed our defense to play 9 vs 7.

Absolutely, Ty and you can even throw Nash in there make anyone look good. I'll just always argue continuity is better. Go look at who we replaced Butler and Princewill with in the portal from my post above. No one can tell me we got the better end of the deal in the DL portal.

We lost our ENTIRE starting front 7 to the NFL or the portal. Imagine if we kept 3 guys from that instead of having to replace the entire thing?

I think much of it depends on what happens with the top teams. Do coaches like Day, Lanning, Cignetti and Franklin stick around or do they bolt for other jobs?

Bill Snyder was able to make his way upward in the old Big8/Big12 via attrition. OU was a mess post-Switzer/pre-Stoops, McCartney retired from CU, and TO retired in 97. KSU does not hit the same levels were it not for the upheaval amongst the top programs they were competing against. We'll hope for the same but agree, it will be tough otherwise.

If he were to get an NFL offer, he'd listen. He and his family went through a lot of shit post-Michigan loss prior to their national title run. His family had death threats and he was outspoken about the impact it had on his mental health.

Plenty of worse CFB HC's have had NFL offers. I wouldn't doubt it if they go after him and he'd consider leaving based on already having won a title and the atmosphere in Columbus when they aren't perfect.

I know about the pressure, threats and unrealistic expectations in Columbus. But there no way in any universe that Day leaves OSU without being fired. Literally zero % chance of that happening. Not to mention he wouldn’t last 3 seasons in the NFL, and he likely knows that.

When your family is getting death threats because you lost to Michigan, I'd say that is a hell of reason to rethink your career prospects.

I mean this respectfully... so we let two guys go, one of which was a starter, that produced for us so we could free up money to grab Nwaneri who had 2 tackles and a sack for Mizzou? If that's who we are freeing up money for God help us.

As I've said before, we don't have the money people think we do if the above are the decisions we are making. With that said, we do have to start figuring out if we want to pay the back 50% of our roster or not. The fact we are having to make that decision is telling though.

Here's my thing though... keep the guys you recruited. If we recruit Princewill (Freshman AA) and James Williams (leading returning sack man) and then we just let them leave and tell people they weren't that good, we will always be starting over. My entire point is that we need to recruit guys that want to be here and keep them, it will ALWAYS be cheaper. I'll scream this to anyone that is willing to listen, 1890 stated to me how lucky we were that Robinson and Nash didn't dip their toes in the portal because we couldn't have afforded to keep them. We don't have the money t be a portal team if a conference championship, CFP, or even 9/10 wins is our goal. We have to be a development team and keep players in Lincoln.

Keeping guys will always be the best route compared to finding players in the portal. If we would have only had to get Nwaneri instead of 4 guys along our front 4... imagine how much more we would have been able to spend on RB or OL?

It will always be true that the majority of the best players in college football never end up in the transfer portal, so I agree 100%

In today's social media climate, death threats seems like a pretty low bar to clear. Death threat used to mean something. You had to call a guy on the phone and disguise your voice. Or you had to take the time to cut letters out of a magazine to spell out your threat. Now, you just whip your phone out of your pocket and within 20 seconds you can hit send on a threat the target can actually see. I'll bet Rhule got plenty of death threats at Carolina.
