KU got fucked..

These perennial second tier programs consistently get fucked against blue bloods. It’s horse pussy.
The Big 12 is in a hard place. They would probably like to stick it to OU but they want them in the playoffs for money

Refs not stopping the play after forward progress had been stopped. Terrible jobs by them.
Yeah, that play is going to be replayed and discussed plenty. My question is if the KU player had ripped the ball out of the OU RB's hands would the Refs have called it a fumble? But hats off to the OU QB for thinking so quickly. Showed a good Football IQ. Great play that might have saved their season.

My argument as well. Also if before the QB takes the ball if the RB falls down where is the ball spotted? Most likely where he was originally stopped. So progress was stopped, play should have been dead

So you don’t agree with the refs that it was a legal handoff behind the LoS? Should’ve been called dead after forward progress?

I just never know how that is supposed to be called. Looked like a great 4th down stand.

I think the play should have been dead. Forward progress had been stopped

Gotcha, is it just an eye test thing determining if a guy is going to break a tackle or is the play technically dead as soon as forward progress stops?

Looked pretty clear he was stopped in the backfield but maybe there wasn’t enough “tackle”? I didn’t get it.

To me the test is this, if at that point that RB goes down, where do the refs spot the ball? 100% they’d spot it where his progress was stopped, so the play is over

But if he doesn’t go down when is the whistle supposed to be called? Immediately or is there something they’re looking for specifically?

Might need @alt f4 I’m curious

Either way I was bitching about it in the garage

OU had a situation earlier in the game where OU had forward progress stopped but the refs let play out. KU got a 1st down out of it and Riley was furious.

The refs were consistent on both sides at least.

IIRC, the rule isn't that the refs should blow it dead the moment forward progress has stopped, but rather it's not supposed to be blown dead unless the ball carrier has stopped trying to make additional forward progress. In other words, if he's still pumping his legs, the play continues. (I haven't watched the play in question, so IDK there.)

I didn't see this particular play, yet so I'm not speaking of the KU play, just in general.

Ruling forward progress in a pile, well sucks. It seems either way nothing good comes out of it. And replay can't help either way.

As an official you want a slow whistle in case runner breaks free, but a fast enough whistle that there are no cheap turnovers.

Basically if you feel runner is in grasp of defender, not moving forward, and won't make significant yards or non impactful yards (ie close to first down.) you want a pretty quick whistle to kill it.

Sometimes that might be within a pile other times it might be a yard or two behind forward progress. The part where you get fucked is it you're just slow enough and ball pops loose. If you don't react fast enough at this point, you have to let it play out.

If you do rule progress and ball is loose, you have to own it loud and confidently because the defense will come unglued with any hesitantion.

That was my thought when watching it live, and also my thought on a 2AM fumble that either lost a game or ended the chance of winning it. Can't remember which one since there have been so many 2AM fumbles.

@alt f4, have they changed the guidelines on when to blow a whistle to end a play for lack of forward progress? What about when the forward progress ended 1.5 yards earlier, they ball carrier isn't down, but is wrapped up by two defenders?

Even in games I couldn't care less about, I see a lot of instances where the forward progress whistles are very, very late and weird shit happens before the whistle occurs.

I have zero doubt that the exchange was legal. My argument is that the play should have been blown dead.

College football refs don’t do anything anymore and just let replay decide everything. But forward progress isnt reviewable.

I stand by my argument that if the hand off never happens, and the running back falls down after being driven back, the refs would have spotted it where he was initially contacted. If that is the case then progress was stopped.

I posted the rule just so everyone could see what they ruled on, however I do agree with you forward progress had stopped and should have been blown dead. In my post above you can see the defender had stopped forward progress and pushed the RB back at least 3 yards before the exchange.
