I think if we maintain the defensive staff you are looking at this as your most logical staff alignment

OC/QB Whip
RB Beckton
WR/TE Joseph
OL/TE Raiola

ST Busch

Basically you would probably have a GA working with the TEs as well. When they are working in group throw them in with the WRs and when they are working on blocking OL. Not ideal, but you have too many on your defensive staff.

If you lose Dawson, Ruud or T you slide them around Chins takes OLBs. Busch coaches ST. If you lose Fish Busch becomes your DB/ST.

In any situation where you lose a defensive coach you hire a RB coach and keep Beckton.

The big boy move would be when the dust settles and it is clear you are retaining everybody on your staff. You let Ruud go and make the move. I just hate the idea of letting a good coach go, but you need to win.
Is Busch officially a part of the staff right now? I thought I read somewhere that he was on a visit the other night. I think it may have been an in home with Brennan that he accompanied Mickey on

Ya I thought it was interesting.... Gary Sharp apparently asked Fisher about changing jobs 2 years ago and GS read was he was more likely to go to the NFL than another college. Apparently he really likes it here in Nebraska.

The one coach I have kept an eye on is Dawson. I get the sense with how ST was this year he may just want to go back to the NFL.

I think T and Ruud are here.

Chins is about to make 7 figs so that will eliminate a lot of schools from poaching him. If Frost would have been fired I wonder if Day would have hired him? Day got a great DC fwiw.
Dawson to NFL and Chins at OLB sounds just fine to me.

My understanding is that until they hire a 10th full time assistant, they can activate him to recruit.

Either he or Brown have to be pulled off the road with the recent hires. Busch would be the favorite to continue to recruit.

So don't announce Ron Brown until spring ball if that's the route they are going so you get months of recruiting out of Busch?

If Whipple or Raiola aren't here yet would they both be able to still be out recruiting or how does that work? You are obviously much more knowledgeable on the details of all this stuff.

That's what I'd do anyways. I think Busch ends up on staff and since they can already have him recruit, I don't think there is a huge hurry to formalize his exact positional responsibility at this time. Maybe someone on the defensive staff leaves and you have a straight forward spot to put him or maybe you need to get creative with how you handle RBs.

Or, and people might shit their pants when I say this, if you make it through to spring ball with your defensive staff in tact, maybe Brown gets hired and you platoon special teams again.

So you can have 10 guys out recruiting (not counting the head coach). They can visit a recruit once a week, a head coach can only visit a recruit one time.

So yeah theoretically you are correct.

I don't know about signed contract, but he is one of the 10(?) guys they can have on the road crooting. Apparently that is pretty flexible.

I just don't think he had what it takes to ever step up that next level from where he was. Maybe the blow outs don't come as quick in another conference, but I think they come eventually
Maybe... we will never know, but my speculation he would have done better in any conference not named SEC or B1G. His ability to coach up DBs and defend the pass was always consistent.

SEC and B1G are some of the most physical leagues and his scheme never adapted.

That is honestly the cleanest move, but Dawson is a damn good coach.
I thought Dawson was the top or one of the top coaches Frost brought with him. I like his versatility as he can coach multiple positions plus has good recruiting connections on the East Coast. Doesn't hurt that he coached in the NFL as an OLB Coach. I feel this D Staff is solid but like everyone else is saying it might have 1 too many coaches.

Back in our heyday we had 2 O Line Coaches and that was when we were only allowed 9 Asst Coaches. Also during Riley's time we had a Full Time Special Teams Coach even though there were only 9 Asst Coaching slots.

Do you think Dawson is a better coach than Ruud? If so, why? Just curious
I think they are both really good coaches...

Dawson has a much better resume and experience.

I think if you look at both of their rooms you have to think their best days are ahead of them.

Ruud has
  • Nick - freshmen top tackler in the B1G. Future Sunday guy
  • Reimer - Soph top tackler in the B1G. Future Sunday guy
  • Kpai - Freshmen who has been RAVED about by everybody I talk to and listen to.
  • Gbayor - Freshmen who is a stud in the works
  • Kolarvic - Junior who is a solid #2
  • Honas - Senior who we all forget about. If his knees hold up he will be another solid piece to that room
  • Muaga - Junior who I think is a solid depth guy, but wouldn't shock me if transfers
Dawson has
  • Tannor - Senior who I think was playing his best ball late in the year. I think he could play himself into the league if he continues his trajectory. Kid has really grown since Dawson.
  • Nelson - Soph who remember how he use to just play hard? Now he is fitting in assignment a lot more. Sometimes he is still a little too boom or bust, but he is trending the right way
  • Wright - Frosh who needs to get healthy, but I felt we would have saw a lot of him this year had he been healthy.
  • Then you have the other Frosh... Ho'ouhili the cross between Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. He will be pushing for playing time next year. Blaise who fucking looks like an OLB for Wiscy who would win 1st team All B1G. If he stays healthy he will be a force. Butler who was also starting to get playing time late in the year because of injuries. It is pretty obvious to see why Payne transferred.
I think you look at what both coaches have done you really can't be upset with either. Both had great players this year and have a loaded pipeline IYAM.

I believe in my gut that the move (tough one) is to let Ruud go and have Chins coach the OLBs. Mentioned this exact scenario to a co-worker and they wondered who would recruit the Nebraska kids. No hesitation, Mickey would.

Do not want to lose T-Fish.
