I have a family member with bipolar disorder. It’s a constant battle. Receiving treatment, but as is common, frequently stops taking meds because she doesn’t think she needs them.

Yep that's the key. People with bipolar or schizophrenia can do VERY well while on their meds, but once they slip and go off......it can be real bad.
