New Commit Jamir Conn is N

I’m still trying to wrap my head around what we are doing in the secondary. My hunch is we’re going away from 3 safeties that play “left” and “right”, with a free/rover type position and into a more traditional free and strong, with a nickel replacing the rover. And with that, we needed to recruit more true corners.

But, I want to be excited about Hill, Sanders and Tarver. I want them to see the field. If we keep recruiting corners, I’m not sure what that’s signaling to them. Maybe Conn is purely a KC family addition and we’re bringing him on because of the message it tells the other kids we’re pursuing from that region. I hope that’s the case, as otherwise it tells me we whiffed on who’s on our roster except for Wright. We don’t need another developmental project.

Aside from a healthy Hill and Wright, we didn’t do a great job in man and I think that’s what Butler wants to play. In reality we’ll need to be able to play man to bring the kind of pressure we want. Without Robinson and Nash, we’re likely to see more blitz packages that include LB’s and corners/safeties/rover, so being able to have to legit man corners on the field at the same time is going to be a must.

Without Butler and Williams probably more so than Nash.

Of course they have/brought some guys in who should be able to help generate pressure, at least in an ideal world

The reason I mention Nash and Robinson is not so much their pass rush prowess, but their ability to demand doubles and open up one on ones or require an opponent to hold back a RB or TE to chip in on pass pro. We’ll miss Butler and Williams, but if whoever we send is one on one, especially against something other than a true OL, that’s the situation I’d want to be in. Fingers crossed some of the youth in the DT and DE rooms can earn doubles this fall.

I know Coop was big on guys who were versatile & could play multiple spots in the defensive backfield. Just a guess, but thinking Butler is moving away from that mentality & looking for DBs who fit a certain role. Which probably goes along with what @Quint suggested, of more of an emphasis on man coverage.

Regardless, when we're bringing in 3+ guys to a room that has ~27 during a cutdown year, it's hard to think that could be anything besides a philosophy shift.

With the roster limitations, the shift makes sense and kind of aligns with an NFL mindset. I’ll be interested to see how he handles the nickel and rover positions in particular. What is almost always a struggle is getting those guys to play man, zone and run support at a high level. That’s often a lot to ask.
