Wait wait wait. Am I reading that buyout correctly? If the university fires him without cause, he's owed his base+supplemental ($8 million) + insurance ($1 million) for $9 million a year, multiplied by the number of years left on his contract? So if he's fired with 9 years left without cause and no negotiations are done, Penn St. needs to pony up $45 million?
And THIS is for a coach who went 4-5 last year and is 2-4 in his last six games? With the possibility of going 2-5 to cap a 7-5 season?
FUCK.
Well it is an academic institution, so oftentimes their business sense is whack. I'd be embarrassed if I was the AD and that's how is contract was structured.
If coach had leverage, I'd think Administration would need to figure out a way to come up with their own leverage. Probably not an easy solution, but fuck some of these contracts are ridiculous.

Base pay is for coaching. Supplemental pay is for all the other shit (media, likeness, sponsorship, etc.) generally. Can someone use their crayons to explain the difference between base pay and supplemental pay?

If only that were true.In my opinion, in this situation, PSU’s leverage was “We like our chances of finding a coach just as good if not better than you without having to structure his contract like he’s Mike fucking Trout.”
