From 30 scholarship offers down to three, every cut Jacory Barney has made in his recruitment has drawn attention.

The move from three to one, revealed via a live announcement with Rivals on Instagram Saturday evening, will probably be remembered quite a bit more. The Miami (Fla.) Palmetto star chose Nebraska over finalists Miami and Texas A&M.
"I'll be headed to the University of Nebraska!" Barney told Rivals. "I just feel like that's the school I need to be at. The coaches, they've been seeing it in me, they've been seeing me as the blue-chip receiver. They expect me to come to their program, be an impact player as a freshman.
"They were just one of the first ones that believed in me for real. I just want to be their guy."

The speedy Barney, who many felt could stay home with Miami after the Hurricanes' late push for his services in June, took his official visit to Lincoln to kick off the month of June and the Huskers didn't look back.

It's when he knew where the next step would take place.

"I knew on the visit," Barney said. "I didn't expect it to be like that. You think of Nebraska and you expect cornfields out there, but it's not that. It's a little town and the people are crazy, they treat the players like celebrities. It's all about football there, too, and it's a safe place. I can just focus and get out of my own zone.

"I'm from Miami, so just being able to feel comfortable and walk around free...you know you're good and the coaches got you, too. It's a home away from home."
Of course the coaches at Nebraska played a major role throughout Barney's recruitment. From early prioritization, even compared to other finalists, Matt Rhule and Garret McGuire remained steady on two-way talent.
That battery found success at multiple stops, but sees Barney as it did a fellow Miami native back in their Baylor days.
"Coach McGuire, that's my guy," Barney said. "Being that he played football, he coached in the league, he's on the younger side and someone who can feel where I'm coming from. He's just got it. I believe he can develop me. I feel like coach McGuire's got it all and can prepare me for the league one day. He's already compared me to the receivers he's coached, like Tyquan Thornton when they were at Baylor.

"That's what I like, if that's how they want to use me. They're trying to get me the ball, and that's what I like. As long as I get the ball, I know I can make those plays when they need them."
With Rhule, who connected with Barney while on vacation late in the week, it was Barney who had to pitch his future head coach on an important factor for his collegiate decision.
"I want to play for him so I asked him if he thought he would still be here for my next four years and he said, 'definitely,'" Barney said. "He wants to coach me. That's a big thing, too, the head coach is believing in me, too."

As for what's next, the versatile Barney is eager to have the recruiting process behind him after a hectic month of June. He will now prep for his final run at Miami Palmetto while looking to help build a strong NU class of 2024, which has been red hot on the trail this summer with him becoming the 16th new commitment since June 8.

"Husker nation, we're coming!" he said. "We're bringing it back, we're trying to get that next title up there. With this staff, we can do it. With players like me, quarterbacks like Danny (Kaelin) dimes, we've got the pieces and we're gonna make it happen."

Glad we landed this kid, but this is such a sad statement for a high schooler to make. Makes me appreciate my small town life.

A good buddy of mine is a big Miami donor and well plugged into the recruiting and NIL side of things for them. He said Barney committed to the U on his visit but we upped our NIL game this morning and stole him from them. Take it for what it’s worth. I think 1890 is a clown show but if they somehow got their shit in order to pull this off, I commend them.
@HuskerGarrett i was wondering about this - can you get us more info?

I can't tell if our NIL sucks or is amazing or somewhere in the middle.

NCIU had some info that they indicated came from another website… they had predicted his commitment earlier in the day.

Jacory’s mom didn’t want him to stay in Miami but Jacory wanted to. Weird situation. They also said McGuire worked his butt off locking him up when his mom opened the door for us.

I think $ is a convenient answer. But I also don’t think it’s over if Jacory truly wants to stay in Miami.

This is the massive thing to me - we are getting guys to commit who visited us BEFORE their other top choices.

He came to us June 2, then A&M, then Miami on June 23 and THEN committed and chose us.

That’s impressive

Jacory Barney commitment: What does it mean for Nebraska?

2024 Nebraska WR commit Jacory Barney.

Nebraska pulled off quite the surprise on Saturday. Miami (Fla.) Palmetto wide receiver Jacory Barney officially committed to the Huskers.

Here are some quick takes and thoughts on the commitment of Barney and what it means for the Huskers.

NU is now up to 23 commits in its class of 2024 with the addition of Barney.

1. Nebraska rolled out the red carpet for Barney on his official visit. He was literally the only offensive skill position player on campus that weekend, which gave Barney a real “red carpet” treatment. The Huskers sold Barney on the big play role he would have in Lincoln for Nebraska.

2. This is another reason to give Nebraska assistant coach Garret McGuire big credit. The youngest coach on the Nebraska staff is becoming quite the recruiter. McGuire kept both Dae’Vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris home, dip into south Florida, and pulled away a recruit from Miami.

3. Another factor in Barney’s recruiting was defensive quality control assistant Phillip Simpson. He was the head coach at Homestead High School in Miami a year ago. Between him, and defensive backs coach Evan Cooper, the Huskers have some strong connections in South Florida.

4. Barney could do several things for Nebraska. He lines up all over on offense for Palmetto and even plays defense. The Huskers have talked about getting Barney involved in screens and slants as well as deep routes and allowing him to go up and get it. He will also be featured as a runner getting in on reverses and jet sweeps. Barney even played some quarterback for Palmetto, so you never know how creative Nebraska could get with a playmaker like Barney in their offense.

5. Barney now becomes the fourth wide receiver in the Huskers class 2024. He’s ranked just below Hall (No. 62) at No. 71 in the wide receiver position overall Industry Rankings. McMorris is right below Barney at No. 75. Currently, there are 66 receivers ranked four stars or higher in the On3 Industry Rankings. Both Barney and McMorris are right on the cutline with a chance to possibly be bumped up in the future.

6. Barney is now the 16th commit NU has added since June 7 and their 23rd overall. His commitment also bumps the class to No. 18 in the latest On3 Industry Team Rankings.

7. Barney is the fourth high school receiver in this year’s recruiting class. A year ago the Huskers added six, along with a transfer. Rhule and his staff have completely rebuilt the wide receiver room for the future with 11 different scholarship additions over 2023 and 2024. He’s the second high school recruit from Florida this year. NU signed one a year ago in defensive back Dwight Bootle.
