Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we hear glowing reports about how impressive and beastly TFRB Kwinten Ives was when he showed up?
Now we haven't heard a thing about him in practice and he's at most fifth string. Not a good sign when a freshman running back doesn't make any kind of splash as a freshman, it seems from history.

Ya but he’s a freshman

He’s going to redshirt no matter what I would think with Irvin, Grant & Johnson & Johnson ahead of him.

I was disappointed when we dropped Arnold Barnes, and this kid was a significant step down as a prospect IMO. I trust EJ Barthel but I didn't like this take one bit.
You mean the kid that ended up at Tulane? Meh.

Ives is reportedly a freak athlete, but he needs time with the weights before we expect much from him. He's somewhere in the range of 6'2 or 6'3 and less than 200 lbs. That's rail thin for a B1G RB.

Depending on freshmen to come in and make an impact right away has not exactly been a winning formula, so let's quit bitching when a coach does what he can to ease the freshmen in so they can adjust properly. Let em redshirt and grow.

I agree. It's just that redshirting running backs is kind of rare and they usually don't go on to great success. That's the Jalin Bradely, Colins Okafor track. All the good ones show it right away, it seems.

After the initial reports on him, I had higher expectations. I don't know if his name has been mentioned once this fall.

I don’t remember hearing anything glowing about him. Project for sure. 6’3 180 and not very explosive usually doesn’t equate to P5 running back. Kewan Lacy will likely pass him up the second he steps on campus

Maybe they see Ives as more of an H-Back down the road?

he was a one man track team as a senior

TBH, the long jump is decent, 100m is average-at-best for a D1 RB prospect. The rest is not particularlly impressive. The shot put is downright unimpressive. Even if not a huge guy, you'd think a D1 athlete would have more snap in his body that that. But it could have also been just a one-time experiement, too, without much training.
He must have gone to a small school if those marks were second on his team.

Palmyra HS is tiny - NJ Class 1, a little over 300 students

I think Nebraska should be extremely worried that a 3 star RB from a high school of 405 kids hasn't jumped straight into a Big 10 program and been the dominant RB over a returning starter, a 4 year player and the guy that those 2 have now been surpassed by in Ervin.

I thought this was going to be a development program? They've had 3 weeks, what are they waiting on with this kid?

That's fine if we expect him to be a role player who doesn't contribute much.

Can you name the last regular starting running back at NU that redshirted? As I said, running back is usually a position where you see it right away. I'm trying to think of the last guy who didn't crack the four-deep as a freshman who "developed" into a starter or big-time contributor.

If we're talking about a highly recruited guy then I could see your worry. But a 3 star kid that played small school ball in Jersey and is only 6'2, 185 lbs...he screams development project. I think Nebraska likes their running back room.

I think when coaches talk about freshman in spring and fall camps, it's to be taken with a grain of salt. Unless they are talking about a high 4 or 5 star player that's expected to play, then mostly likely it's to give them confidence or get the attention of the older guys in that position group.
