A look at Nebraska's in-state scholarship offers

ByMICHAEL BRUNTZ 89 minutes ago

Gunnar Gottula

Nebraska is putting the finishing touches on the 2022 recruiting class, but has worked ahead on the 2023 classes and beyond. That’s especially true with in-state recruiting, where the Husker staff has been aggressive with early offers to the state's top prospects.

The Huskers entered January with a pair of in-state commitments in Lincoln Southeast offensive tackle Gunnar Gottula and Pierce wide receiver Benjamin Brahmer.

New Nebraska wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph and inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud are splitting in-state recruiting efforts, and the Huskers will have hosted several in-state prospects with offers during its January junior days.

With the Huskers in the midst of hosting junior days that are going to be heavy on local flavor, let’s take a look at the in-state offers Nebraska has made.

Nebraska was the third program to offer Lincoln Southeast offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula, following Cockeye State and Kansas State in extending a scholarship offer. Gottula was offered by Nebraska in June 2021, and took just two weeks to commit to the Big Red. Gottula is rated a three-star prospect with an overall rating of 86 according to 247Sports.

Brahmer was the first commit in Nebraska's 2023 recruiting class, picking up an offer from the Big Red in February 2021, and committing to Nebraska in April 2021. A rangy, tall athlete, Brahmer could end up at either wide receiver or tight end depending on how his 6-foot-5, 185-pound frame develops. Brahmer is a three-star prospect with an overall rating of 87, according to 247Sports.

2023 OMAHA Pickle Smoochers PREP LINEMAN SAM SLEDGE

Sledge picked up his Nebraska offer during a Junior Day visit on Jan. 22. Miami of Ohio was the first offer for Sledge, who is being recruited as an interior offensive lineman by Nebraska. In addition to the Huskers, Kansas, Cockeye State and other Midwest programs are keeping tabs on the Omaha Pickle Smoochers Prep lineman, who has played a number of offensive line positions during his high school career.

2023 LINCOLN EAST ATHLETE MALACHI COLEMAN

The No. 1-rated recruit in the 2023 class in Nebraska, Lincoln East's Malachi Coleman has received plenty of regional and national recruiting attention. The Huskers extended an offer to the 6-foot-5, 180-pound athlete on Oct. 1, 2021. Minnesota, Kansas and Kansas State quickly followed suit. Michigan, Missouri and a host of other programs have been in contact with Coleman, who is a four-star prospect according to 247Sports and holds an overall rating of 91.

2023 ELKHORN SOUTH EDGE RUSHER MAVERICK NOONAN

Nebraska legacy Maverick Noonan caused headaches for opponents on the field as a junior at Elkhorn South and watched his recruitment explode off the field. Noonan, the son of former Husker defensive lineman Danny Noonan, received his Husker offer in December 2020, and now holds offers from Arizona State, Michigan State, Cockeye, Missouri and a host of other Power Five programs. The 6-foot-4 225-pound Noonan holds an overall rating of 88 according to 247Sports and is the No. 2-rated prospect in Nebraska in the 2023 recruiting class.

2024 OMAHA WESTSIDE ATHLETE CALEB BENNING

2024 Omaha Westside athlete Caleb Benning is one to watch in the Metro. The son of former Husker running back Damon Benning, Caleb Benning picked up a Nebraska offer from head coach Scott Frost on Thanksgiving this fall. He is also being recruited by Cockeye, Minnesota and other Midwest programs. Benning was a big part of Westside's run to a state finals appearance in 2021.

2024 BELLEVUE WEST WIDE RECEIVER DAE'VONN HALL

2024 Bellevue West wide receiver Dae'vonn Hall has been on the radar of Power Five programs for most of his high school career. Hall picked up a Nebraska offer in Dec. 2020, and since then has been offered by Minnesota, Cockeye, Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri. As a sophomore, Hall caught 43 passes for 592 yards and nine touchdowns. He is a Top-100 prospect in the 2024 recruiting class according to 247Sports and holds an overall rating of 90, making him a four-star prospect.

2024 BELLEVUE WEST QUARTERBACK DANIEL KAELIN

Nebraska extended an offer to 2024 Bellevue West quarterback Daniel Kaelin in May 2021. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder also holds offers from Arizona State, Minnesota and Kansas. He is currently unrated by 247Sports, and split time at quarterback as a sophomore. Kaelin completed 50-of-82 passes for 693 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

2025 OMAHA BURKE EDGE RUSHER CHRISTIAN JONES

College recruiters have made Omaha Burke a regular stop in looking for elite defenders in recent years, and 2025 linebacker Christian Jones is poised to be the next in line. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Jones picked up offers from Nebraska and Minnesota on Dec. 3, 2021, and has since added offers from Cockeye State and Kansas after a productive freshman season. Jones is currently unrated by 247Sports.

2025 OMAHA NORTH DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TYSON TERRY

Nebraska didn't waste any time offering 2025 Omaha North defensive lineman Tyson Terry in January 2022. Terry, one of the state's top heavyweight wrestlers, will be a national recruit, and saw Cockeye State and Kansas quickly follow with offers shortly after Nebraska did. Terry is currently unrated by 247Sports, but at 6-foot-2, 265 pounds is already attracting plenty of looks from Power Five programs.
