Here is what I think could be happening.....

1: Rhule hires GM and everyone is wondering why because he is like 14 years old with no experience.

2: GM over two seasons proves to be a below average coach but above average recruiter.

3: The WRs have issues and new OC Dana H notices. After all he has lots of WR coaching experience himself.

4: Dana gets hired as official OC and tells Rhule that McGuire has to go.

5: Rhule agrees but knows that McGuire has good recruiting ties to two late deciders for the '25 class. If we boot GM now we will probably lose our chances with those two. We are soooo close to landing them. Taking a look at the current WR room both agree that they need these dudes pretty badly.

6: Dana and Rhule agree to bring in WR coach Shorts and also say we are keeping GM in some sort of WR associated role and he is definitely still on the staff....wink wink.

7: Signing day comes and we get one or both of the late targets. Everyone is happy. The two WR recruits enroll early and get settled in.

8: Time goes on and we don't hear much from GM until one quiet Wednesday in February there is a quick and hushed announcement that GM has taken a new job at Tulsa/North Texas/UTSA. A spot Rhule helped him land.

Nebraska gets the recruits.
Dana gets his WR coach.
GM gets a new job more suited for his level.
Tsakoi is from then on called Nostradamus.

I think that it's okay if Doogie goes into an analyst/intern role and learns from Dana how to be a better WR coach and future OC. Yes, we all complained that's he's basically the WR's big brother that no one takes serious, hopefully GM will learn a few things and move on and become an OC at a G5/Sun Belt school.

Interesting theory,

I have one.

Rhule is a developer of talent, I think he liked the big roster and hates the portal.

He just lost a ton of young talent he invested in to develop. This is a different job than the one he signed up for. I think this is Rhules last year and he potentially steps down instead of being fired. College football has become a sport that needs elite talent to win with the 105 and you need recruiters more than developers.

9. WR recruits enter the portal

I don't think you can risk a bait and switch like the old days

Rhule has shown a willingness to have a huge support staff that doesn't appear to do a whole lot, so I wouldn't be surprised if McGuire stays

I think you both should take a few weeks off from message boarding.

Agree with you, however, I felt like the roster is bloated at 150 with a lot filler personnel who don't get developed or never would have a chance here or anywhere else. Rhule needs to be careful because Nebraska might become the feeder school for developing players to get paid more elsewhere. Hopefully I'm overreacting, but we knew the fat needed to be cut.

It seems better for Rhule that they can get a fully paid 105 than 85 + 50 with at least 42 of those never having a meaningful chance of getting on the field.

In some ways, Rhule has walked into the best time to ever be a Nebraska coach where the walkon program has been mostly killed by the NCAA and you can really tighten the belt on only taking dudes you think have a path to playing instead of satisfying the yokels with taking Valentine's best fullback

I dont think that will be the case. Nebraska has too much money to be a feeder school. I think our top players for the most part will always stay at Nebraska. I think in this new era of college football the middle of the roster is going to be where the most negative turnover will happen. Princewill for example, I would assume Nebraska wanted to keep him, but how much can you justify paying a player who had 5 tackles this year? For this year, I think there will be a lot of replacement level players available with schools moving to the 105.

I think McGuires best route to success would be thru being an OC. By all accounts he’s a really smart football guy, but perhaps motivating and developing WRs isn’t his forte. I think his best course of action is to grind as a background guy for a little bit, and then rhule can help set him up as a OC at a really low level (I’m talking D3 or lower) and he can build himself up from there.

Honestly, how are you supposed to evaluate a coach these days when he gets different players constantly coming and going at this pace?
I guess it depends if you are on the X’s and O’s side of the fence or the Jimmys and Joes side.

He has the right contacts. I doubt he goes that low division wise.

We don't need to over think this. Rhule sees McGuire as a smart football guy and an above average recruiter AND McGuire has big Texas ties. I guarantee you Rhule wants to keep him in the org in some capacity. Remember we don't have a lot of TX ties on staff now:
  • Shorts - from NJ
  • Barthel - from NJ
  • Dvoracek - from PA/Temple
  • Butler - from Philly
  • Raiola - Honolulu
  • Knighton - from CT/Temple
This is a great staff of you're trying to dominate recruiting in the PA/NJ area. We need recruits from Texas, Georgia and Florida though. That's why McGuire is important to have on your recruiting team. Shorts BTW has TX ties from his time at Houston, so that's good as well.

Your position coaches need to be able to target these recruiting hot spots IMO. You can't have everyone be from the northeast.

You make players better, win games, and put motherfuckers in the NFL.

Knighton died though
