He may have mixed feelings on it, but it's always worse when the parent/family member comes out against it. There have been a few cringeworthy recruiting announcements where the recruit goes against the family wishes and those people all reveal themselves as terrible.

Grandpa Lloyd likely realizes he does not have much time left on the Earth and his grandson is going to a place where he'll get a good education.
