How dumb is it

From R word to go for it, how stupid is it to drop nearly 70k on a new truck?

I’ve driven an 05 Corolla for 9 years. No issues, cheap as hell to drive. Big hunter, 2 kids and a wife, and have wanted a truck forever. Only debt is my house. Student loans gone. Well on track for retirement and I’m not quite 33. I’ve never dropped that much cash on anything and it gives me chest pain to think about. Would plan to keep it 10+ years. I’m sure there is a wide range of opinions here. It won’t handicap me but fucking A.
OP - "You'll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse". If its something you want and you can afford it and hopefully get a good deal on it, buy it, you never know what tomorrow will bring.

If you're going to keep it for a long time and it makes you happy why not? Life's too short to drive a Corolla.
Or trade it in every couple years. You really don’t spend a whole lot doing it that way.

I would just look at what you need and evaluate whether you really need all the bells and whistles that come at the $70k price point. My brother bought a loaded full-sized truck new, paid ~$55k when he bought it. I bought a 4WD crew cab mid-sized truck, used but only a year old, for ~$25k. A mid-sized is more than enough for my purposes, can do most of the same things, and it was less than half the price of an equivalent new full-sized truck. There may be trucks out there that do 80% of what you want at 40% the price. Good luck!

Last year I totaled my 2001 half ton Silverado and proceeded to buy a 2002 Ford 3/4 ton with the 7.3 powerstroke, then bought 2002 Silverado much like my last pickup. Both are fairly low mile for their age and I spent 21k between the two.

I’ve spent some money on them as you’d expect, but I was thinking I was real smart having two pickups so if I have trouble with one I got a backup. Well the other day I rolled down the window on my Silverado and it wouldn’t roll back up, which really fucking sucks when it’s cold out. Proceeded to get in 7.3 and my starter went to shit on it the same day I have this window problem.

Moral of the story, it doesn’t have to be new but get something nice enough that you don’t look forward to death like I do.

The only thing I hate about this strategy in NE is the exorbitant cost of licensing & sales tax every time you acquire a new (to you) vehicle. It's absurd.
I agree I wish I lived in South Dakota. I have a 2016 vehicle I’m still paying 330 bucks on for a motor vehicle tax. It’s a joke.

$13 for my Corolla. And I can use it as a ladder in my garage without feeling guilty.
I can’t justify spending a huge amount on a vehicle. I just want dependability that gets me from point A to B. I would rather spend my money on other things. I’ve never took out a loan for a vehicle. It’s nice not having to worry about a vehicle payment.
