Hagler/Hearns turns 40

I remember watching it with my Dad and brother when I was a kid. I think 90% of the reason my Dad agreed for paying for HBO was because they had boxing matches like this.

Legendary fight in a great era of boxing. Such a different time and much better sport then.
My dad was a big boxing fan too. Watched a lot of great fights growing up. I remember trying to get my dad to get a Tyson pay-per-view and he was like why it's going to be over in five minutes 🤣.

Loved Marvelous Marvin. Was pissed when the decision went to Sugar Ray. Those were the golden days of boxing. Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Leonard...so many greats.

That group took the baton when the Heavyweight division started to falter and prior to Tyson’s rising. Ali, Foreman, Norton and Frazier were on the way out or already out and Holmes wasn’t flashy or interesting to the viewing public. These guys carried the sport.

Is there another time a weight class was that good/interesting?

I’d say the ‘70’s in the heavyweight division. Between the champions and the rest of the top ten contenders, that was an impressive group.

The guys we’d talked about before, were scattered across the welterweight, super welterweight, middleweight and super middleweight divisions to start with. I think they all fought each other in the middleweight division, though I’d have to check.

They all fought each other at least once. Don't really care what specific weight class they were.

The 70s heavy weights were great but I'm not that old. So didn't really experience it.

Sure. I get it. Great group and a great time to be a boxing fan.

I cut my teeth watching a rebroadcast of the '71 Ali-Frazier fight and I was hooked.

Lots of great heavyweight fights from then until the early '80's middleweight dominance.

Now that you say that I don't think I've watched any of those full fights. Highlights of course but none from front to back. Sounds like a good plan. Just not the same when you already know who wins.
