There were a bunch of guys that seemingly needed to shit or get off the pot. Let's take a look at if the following were able to do it with what we heard during spring.

A crowded Running back room:
I feel like Rahmir Johnson solidified himself as a playing time candidate once again. The guy emerged only as the season went on last year after a pretty quiet spring and summer where many thought (including me) he was a transfer candidate. Now he appears to have stepped up as a leader too.

Yant needed a big spring after varying results running the ball last year. People doubted if he could get into shape or had the mental toughness to overcome some attitude issues that crept up late in the season. I feel like he answered the questions because he reported in good shape and was rumored to be a bull in practice. Looked good despite not being able to show off his top trait in the two hand touch spring game, his ability to break tackles.

Newcomer Anthony Grant seemed to do what he needed to do to get into the playing time conversation. He showed up, practiced well and broke a big run in the game. Add a good summer and he'll look like a recruiting steal.

Off the pot: Markese Stepp. This has seemed like a bad transfer for a while now. Injuries made sure it started bad and he was never able to get any sort of positive momentum going. Doubtful to factor him in to much PT on Saturdays.

Gabe Irvin gets no grade from me. Still recovering from an injury and has the chance to be buried by the time the season gets rolling. Unfortunate, but that's how college football goes.

Defensive backs:

Farmer and Newsome have the most experience and didn't hurt themselves at all.

Issac Gifford and Marques Buford seemed to build on all the positive things we heard about them from last year and should see time this year.

Tommi Hill and Deshon Singleton seem to be the newcomers getting rave reviews now. Tommi also puts in time on special teams. Sounds like they did what they needed to do. Omar Brown and Javier Morton were big transfers/recruits but didn't seem to make much noise. Jury still out there based on such a short time in Lincoln.

Tyreke Johnson had a quiet spring but made a play or two in the spring game. That's a positive sign. Will it be enough?

Off the pot: Noa Pola Gates looks like a 4 star bust at this point. He has never flashed bright enough to be noticable despite him being such a coveted high school recruit. If it didn't happen this spring with 3 DB positions open, when will it?

Braxton Clark could be the guy who gets passed over. Didn't really hear any buzz about him. Transfer?

Tamon Lynum has been reported to be a good teammate and put on the size needed but still might be low on the chart. Might need another year.

Javin Wright: Is he a safety? OLB? 3rd down passing coverage LB like Jojo? Hasn't Issac Gifford usurped him for that spot already? Did he even play in the spring game? Is he passed his blood clot issues? Might be time to move on and give his scholarship to a contributor.

What do you think guys?

DL - Wildeman seems like a lost scholarship as long as he's on the roster.

ILB - Has Snodgrass been passed up by the youth in that room? Maybe he'd consider moving down a level to play FCS somewhere.

OL - Is what it is at this point. Not many moves to make their unless you're ready to move on from a Michael Lynn or Alex Conn (I wouldn't object)

Thanks for this. Would welcome yore take on all of the other positions. Good stuff…..

I think Omar Brown was out recovering from an injury all spring. I also think Clark is a guy you'd encourage to stick around from a leadership perspective in that room, and he's also a pretty capable 3rd or 4th corner.

I worry about Farmer starting at safety. Wish we had someone step up and take his spot or if he develops too, I'd be ok with that. He is experienced but ever since his 2 interception game against Northwestern he hasn't showed me much. Slow in coverage, bad tacking angles and even worse when it comes to tackling. JMO

I think we basically employed the “throw numbers at it” method for DBs and I think it should work.

I like this list. I’m not ready to give up on NPG.

Confused by your takes on the DBs. You gave a great review for Hill, but Braxton Clark earned the start over him then you proceeded to say he's going to transfer. That doesn't make sense. It took Clark until he was a senior to earn a starting spot, so maybe that's how long it will take NPG. Word is his biggest problem is gaining weight. Hasn't been able to gain much since his arrival.

I haven't heard a single person that's seen practice that doesn't put him solidly at #1 on the depth chart.

We are giving up on guys who were showing a ton of promise as RS Freshmen before a season ending injury? Tough crowd
Was he really showing a ton of promise or is his dad one of the greats from the 90s so we assumed he would be really good?

Wright had an absurdly nice pick in a spring game a year or 2 back, he's got all the tools. But I'm also fairly skeptical someone with a history of multiple blood clots will/should be on a football field.
