Breaking Great news for the B1G...bad news for Bears fans

Does everyone hate Warren b/c NU wanted to play football and he canceled the season?

Everything else he accomplished seems to be good right? Adding USC/UCLA and the new TV deal.

Or am I missing something?

His mismanagement of the Covid situation is a huge strike against him.

However, the majority of his work as commissioner was actually quite good. Not only did he do the new TV deal and get USC/UCLA; pounding the table and not budging on playoff expansion until the media rights deal with ESPN was over for the playoff was huge as well and likely gave him more leverage with Fox to negotiate a solid deal with the conference.

Yup pretty much

Yes, we hate him because he tried to cancel football. That's kind of a huge deal.

The expansion/TV deal was not really his doing. TV execs & puppetmasters worked it out while Warren played figurehead.

Obviously. TV execs like to pay out the ass for deals they strike with people who have no formal authority to sign them.
Yeah, this "TV execs made it happen" take is really bad and simply designed to minimize what was a historic deal. The success of what he did was not just the money, but spreading it out across 3 broadcast networks + BTN. No TV exec was advising him to take his product to the competition.

For some reason, he's been the only guy to look at what the NFL does with its deals and said, "Let's do that." That approach gets them to pay the most money and give you the most promotion. No TV execs are saying to him, "What would be great is if you could get all of us to pay you top dollar, something like the NFL, which is the most expensive thing we buy... you should be just like that."

Per ESPN, Warren was not given a contract extension by the Big Ten
B1G not giving him an extension is QED of Warren not being the man who made this deal happen.

Chancellors & Presidents lost faith in Warren, and had Jim Delany as the godfather negotiating the TV deal. Along with the TV execs (who de facto controlled expansion - not the multi-network aspect of the rights, which is a strawman), the power players were everyone except Warren, who was allowed to get credit for this to facilitate his landing spot.

The whole Covid situation at the beginning of his tenure was a mess. At that time, it was smart and necessary to be patient and careful when trying to come up with a plan to safely play football. The problem was, he seemed like he wasn't interested in coming up with ANY plan at all. He seemed like he was trying to hide and wait out the clock somehow.

Anyway, the rest of his tenure was fine, but it seems like this will probably be a better fit for all involved.

Yeah made a whole lot of sense to cancel the football season but play a full basketball season which is indoors. 🤦‍♂️
