I didn't think the TT was that great. TBF it is early June though and there's usually not much going on.

The Casey Thompson stuff wasn't new, but it is interesting. Over the last 2 months the NU beat writers have been pushing this "CT is not the for-sure starter yet" narrative and I'm wondering why that is. With CT's experience vs Purdy's lack of experience + injury, this really should be CT's job right now. But the local beat writers are all pushing this message about CT not wrapping up the starter job yet. They've obviously been fed this info by the coaches, I'm just wondering why.

CT had such a light years ahead position vs Purdy and Smothers. If he actually gets beat out for the starting job that would be one hell of an indictment of CT's ability.

Probably some classic "cutting-edge" motivational tactics by the coaches to keep Thompson hungry, confused, and on his toes via the media which ALWAYS works and NEVER annoys the players

Purdy is in the best position to challenge Thompson, I’m told. Smothers, though, has said he loves being in the program and intends to keep battling. Heinrich Haarberg still has a lot of ground to make up on the top three.

So, again we ask: Is this Thompson’s team? I’m going with a resounding “no.”

He has work to do. Plenty to prove. Plus, Nebraska’s in a code-red, win-now type season. Scrutiny in these type of seasons gets turned up, or so one would think.

Consider: Athlete Branding & Marketing, founded last summer and run by former Nebraska football chief of staff Gerrod Lambrecht, said in an early April news release that it had worked with donors around the state to raise more than $3.5 million to help Nebraska athletes in the NIL realm.

ABM has worked with athletes in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling.

I’m told Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg has targeted a point person – a prominent businessman in Nebraska – to head up efforts to specifically help his program with NIL deals.

That process could move quickly. It needs to move quickly.

A genuine congratulations to Nebraska sophomore running back Rahmir Johnson, who graces the cover of the Lindy’s college football preview magazines you’ll find in our state.

Nebraska coaches are confident in its stable of running backs. Johnson, by the way, is the team’s leading returning rusher (495 yards) from last season.

Coaches have to find ways to get the ball to the fleet 5-10, 185-pounder who has excellent hands. Sez here Anthony Grant, a JUCO transfer, will capture the starting job. Jaquez Yantis squarely in the picture, too.

Meanwhile, Nebraska coaches are excited about the return of Gabe Ervin Jr. from a knee injury. Don’t be surprised if Ervin quickly puts himself in position to be the starter.

There had been some concern about Chancellor Brewington’s availability this season due to injury, but that picture apparently is looking better and better. That’s obviously good news for Nebraska’s tight end group.

Nebraska’s camp season includes a specialist camp Saturday. Expected to be on hand: all-time Husker greats Brett Maher, Alex Henery, and Sam Koch. That’s some “wow” material for campers.

Early arrivals:

All but one of Nebraska’s newcomers are expected to be on campus by Monday. The lone exception is Texas Tech defensive line transfer Devin Drew, who won’t be in Lincoln until July.

Drew is in Kansas City finishing up his final classwork to graduate from Texas Tech.

I also think it's for the Purdy family IMHO. I think Frost had to promise them that Chubba would get a fair shot to compete for the starting job. Now.... how a guy with virtually no experience AND who missed a chunk of spring due to injury could even think about competing with a guy who was a starter in the Big 12 is beyond me.

That's why I'm saying, if CT can't beat out a guy who has zero experience AND missed a bunch of spring practice w injury, then CT's career is in real trouble. Or, possibly CTs hand injury is worse than previously thought.

(I actually think Purdy will be a very good QB, I'm just saying CT had so much of a head start, I don't know how he could possibly NOT win the starting QB job)

I've never been one to be real concerned about recruiting. But if Thompson ends up being a miss or doesn't win the job, in a make or break transfer recruiting cycle, that's just bad strategic recruiting

Agreed, maybe Whipple laid it out a little too thick practice 1 in spring so they are back tracking, but realistically if they did not think CT was #1 he would have played a lot more snaps in spring. Also there is the fact that CT was pretty decent at UT when he was playing, my worst fear would be that his thumb is worse than it is, but you would think that they would not botch that up considering the time that was given.

Yeah, we'll find out what this fall. I just find it very interesting that every single columnist & reporter in Omaha/Lincoln over the last month has made a it a point to reiterate that the QB job is "still open." I just find that odd.

North Stadium obviously wanted that messaging out there. Who knows why. Hopefully it's just to keep CT, CP and LS motivated and in the game over the off-season. HOPEFULLY it's not bc they think CT isn't good enough or hand not healing correctly, etc.
