Rhule on Saturday told HuskerOnline that Hill, who had an inside track to be a starting cornerback to begin the 2024 season, likely will return to action sometime during the coming fall. On the other hand, Bell, a speedy redshirt freshman wide receiver, will miss the entire season, Rhule said.
Both players underwent surgery this past seek.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Hill, a native of Baltimore, played one season for Saint Francis before transferring to Nebraska. He made a rapid ascension up the depth chart during spring practice before going down with a knee injury in the second quarter of last week’s spring game.
“Blye’s injury will take him into the season — he’ll miss some time in the season — but he has a chance to be back,” Rhule said Saturday during a break in a youth football camp in Omaha.
Rhule said Hill has a four- to five-month injury, meaning September could be a legitimate target period for Hill’s return to action. Nebraska opens the season August 31 against UTEP before playing heated rival Colorado the next week.
Blye Hill benefits from parents’ background, Rhule says
Hill has made a very strong impression on his coaches and teammates.
“I think he’s got the right brain,” Rhule said Saturday. “His father played in the NFL, his mother was an athlete. He comes from a great family. He was a little under recruited going to a smaller school, but you saw all the traits.
“A lot of guys come in with traits. They’re big, they’re fast, they can run but they’re just not mature enough to handle the coaching. He’s very, very mature, which is a credit to his family.”
