It appears that special teams is once again hit and miss. With essentially unlimited coaches now allowable, why have Foley as a coordinator? Why not bring in a young, hungry, recruiting-focused assistant, and give Foley a senior analyst/consultant/czar title who oversees special teams? Am I missing something?

Foley seems to be pretty bad.

And obviously so is the OC.

I really hope rhule doesn't hitch his wagon to coaches just because he's known them for a while.

Have them because they're good. Foley and satterturd don't appear to be good.

I think the most overlooked play on Saturday was Boomschinis punt to pin the deep leading to the pick 6. Field goals are a major liability again but return games are much improved

Everything we've seen from Rhule suggest that he won't put up with people not getting the job done. Foley is 57 and I am not sure he's a recruiting whiz either. He could easily move him into an administrative role or an off-field role and get someone who is younger that can recruit.

OR

Alvano just sucks and we are working out the kinks with a new snapper and next year will be improved off those two things.

Punt and kick return game looks solid.
Outside of a busted coverage kick return coverage has seemed good too.
Budchini has even had a couple good punts.

Alvano is just garbage. And kicks on kickoffs have been stupid

Buschini appears to be right again. We seem to have gone from train wreck to okay on returns. Got a FG block last game, and have been getting fairly close to blocks on opposing punters.

Kick coverage is so-so.

FG team is the issue, which is the most mental part of the game IMO.

Easy to yell at Foley, and I'm not saying he's great, but most phases of special teams are not a problem.

Honestly I see some real improvement in special teams outside of Alvano.

I think we already have more punt return yards than last year. Boomshini is back with a vengeance. KR looks solid. Kick coverage outside of a pretty damn impressive run on one (he splits 3 dudes on a pretty sick move) has been good, doesn't seem like we have a guy that consistently puts it in the end zone though... Maybe that is alvano later when he's not hurt. Punt coverage has been excellent. The punt block could be concerning if if it ever happens again, but a one off doesn't mean a coach is doing poorly.

oh ya sumbitch?? know what else is hit and miss!!? You’re postin abilities !!

I’m not saying the fire the guy, but couldn’t we have Foley doing exactly what he’s already doing, just with a different title? It would make room to add additional coaching/recruiting prowess to the staff in an official capacity

I think it could be fair to say it's disappointing we didn't get much in the way of kickers in the offseason.

I believe we have a guy that can consistently put it through the end zone on kickoffs, but Rhule has stated he wants to force the other team to return kicks. Once Jimmy Horn got that long return, the next time we kicked off, it went through the end zone so he didn't have that opportunity again.

Below is the notes from the pre-UTEP game press conference where Rhule said he wants the other kicks to have to return.

I will say im not sure how much you can actually coach kickers to improve them. Mentally they have to be tough.
The blocked punt and big kick return we got beat on, though, that needs fixed.

Fg block was a great job lining it up.
This is where I'm at as well.

I'm not sure if it's necessarily a Foley problem. I think it's more about having an elite kicker teach Tristan both mechanics and mental game.

FG kicking is an issue and Rhule is fully aware.

Glad we adjusted but really dumb to not just kick it out of the back from the get-go. Why let one of CU's best players in Horn have a crack against our shaky at best special teams? We're lucky he only took it 60 yards and the defense bailed us out

I agree with you completely, just was saying that has been Rhule's mindset. It seems like he knows we are going to be more physical that basically everyone we play, and he wants that kickoff to set the tone. I mean on that opening kickoff, Gbayor went out and smoked the CU blocker just like he said he was going to do.
