These are all redshirt players with an extra year of eligibility. Jurgens, Piper, and Banks are all in their third years of the program. Jurgens has been a starter since 2019, and still has issues with errant snaps. Piper started the majority of last season. Banks is the only guy out of those three that hasn't seen significant time as a starter. Corcoran is a baby, I'll grant that.
Yes.. they are all RS. Most OL who start in the B1G on good OL's will typically RS.
We still have a really young unit when you compare it to B1G units.
Overall I feel there hasn't been great improvement among Jurgens and Piper. You're definitely more knowledgable on line play than myself, I take it you disagree with my sentiment on those two guys?
I think Cam has... pissed me off to see that high snap, but if that is an isolated incident I will live with it.
Pieper is a guy I can't stand right now. He makes so many mistakes when it comes to technique and communication. Most of the problems on the OL were from the left side. They were responsible for 11/16 pressures. Cam FYI was responsible for 0/16, IIRC RG was 2/16 and RT was 3/16.
I can see why they like Pieper, but he makes so many mistakes.
I also feel Frost's system doesn't help us have a good developing OL room. What is your offensive identity? What does the end picture look like? Now ask those same questions about Cockeye, Wisconsin or shit Illinois. They all have what they want to be. So when you have an OL for Wisconsin who has 4/5 starters being 5th year guys you have guys who have 5 years of running the same fucking system. They know how to run IZ Power Iso Jet. They know what to do if God forbid a defense lines up in a different front because they have practiced it for fucking ever.
There were 3 OL that HCMR recruited that were worth a shit. Jaimes (good) Farinok (avg for B1G) and Decker (Good, but wasn't going to work out). You can't have 3 years where that is it. We are paying for that mistake now. This was a damn near 100% rebuild in a room that just takes time.
Anyway, if you want to see more improvement on the OL you need to do 2 things....
1. Hire a Co-OL coach. There are too many bodies to coach up. You need more eyes and guys teaching here. You are talking about 20+ scholarship athletes. 1/4th of your scholarship guys, but they get 1/10th of the coaching resources?
2. You need an offensive identity. You need to have a clear end game. If you don't have a clear end game, how are you supposed to know how to get there?
Anyway, long story short. This is a huge year for Austin. I don't think it is possible to get to a finished product this year, but he needs to show improvement in his room. You wont see a good B1G OL until you stop needing freshmen or just guys in general to play before they are physically mature. I wouldn't look at OSU. I would look at Cockeye and Wisconsin for the blue print for what we need to be to have a good OL. Sure you will have the occasional freak who starts early, but most of your starters are going to be rs JRs or older.
