If you really want to evaluate a coach and their impact on the game, the middle 8 is such a critical point of every game. It's crucial, and this bowl season has shown what can happen if you miss manage it.
#1 - What the fuck is the middle 8... The middle 8 is the 4 minutes before the half and 4 minutes coming out of the half. More games are won and lost in those crucial 8 minutes than most probably realize.
#2 - The amount of points that can be swung from this time is critical. I'll give you an example, and take the grapes (KSU) in t his case.
They are down vs Bama 14-10 with about a minute left They're 4th and G from the 3 yard line, and choose to throw a PAP vs Bama go up in the game. If they kick the ball, the maximum they are down at half is 21-13, a one score game. But they don't. They go for it, miss, and Bama goes down and scores, going up 21-10, 2 scores.
The grapes know they're outmatched, and fucked up the first half the middle 8, and are compelled to kick an onside. But it doesn't matter. Bama comes down, and scores, and goes up 31-10, 3 score game, and the game is essentially over. After the first 4 minutes of the half. If the grapes would have kicked, and held Bama, the would have been down 14-13 at half and and at most, been down 2 scores after the first possession.
Coaches have a profound effect on the game, and most of the time, it's in that crucial time in the game at the end of the half and coming out of a half. Outside of that timeframe, it's players IMO.
You can also look at Michigan's disphittery. They open up the game with running downhill and running the ball down the field, and then go full on dipshit with an OC that gets cute and tries to outscheme the opposing defense, instead of just using your OL, which is the best in the country at ram rodding it downhill to score. But now they're down multiple scores. And have to kick off to TCU to start the half. Colossal failure.
