Curious if anyone on here has this engine in their Tahoe / Suburban or Yukon

Can never go wrong with a diesel
Yes you can. Ask the guys that had the Ford 6.0L Cummins what they think about it… same can be said of the 5 liter they put in the newer Titans..
I have heard good things about the newer Ram Cummins, and the 6.6 Duramac though. Haven’t heard anything about the 3.0 though.
But there have absolutely been bad diesels. The Ram Ecodiesel has VERY mixed reviews. I’d do extensive research on a new engine model, and wait at least a year.

I have a 2020 GMC Sierra AT4 with the 3.0. Had it 2 and a half years. Best engine in a truck I have ever owned. Way more pulling power (torque up near 500 lbs), and quicker than any gas engine truck I have owned over the years. Quiet, no diesel fumes or stink. When I first got it 2.5 yrs ago, diesel was actually cheaper than gas, so that was nice.

I originally never thought I would want a diesel, let alone a 3.0 ltr. Wife wanted a truck, we were looking for one for her, they had a 2020 Sierra AT4 diesel (the truck I ended up getting) on the lot. I scoffed at the idea of it, thought it would be a dog. We had just driven a 2020 Sierra with the 6.2 ltr gas engine same day right before the 3.0 diesel Sierra. The 6.2 has some balls for sure, very fun to drive. I expected the 3.0 to be a dog. Immediately after pulling out of the dealer lot I hit the gas, and it took off hard and quick. I couldn't believe it, was sure it would be a dud.

Long story short, she wanted a Sierra AT4 with a sunroof. This one (the one I own), doesn't have a sunroof, but it has everything else. I don't like sunroofs anyway. I still didn't plan on getting the truck, but they offered me such a stupid high price in trade for my current rig, plus I got 10K off the new Sierra (right as Covid was hitting, so there were huge rebates, etc and the dealer was itching to make a deal), that it was a no brainer for me to do the deal. Right now my truck is worth 8 to 10 K more than I paid for it 2.5 yrs ago.

I have described how it is quick and torquey, but yes it also gets excellent mileage. On the hwy I get 23+ mpg, would get more but I have bigger tires/wheels so that cuts it down a bit. Pulling my job trailer, which I do every day, it gets almost double the mileage of any gas truck I have ever owned pulling trailers, and I've owned a bunch being a contractor.

My wife did end up getting her AT4 a few months later - same truck, with a sunroof and different color. I had to search for 2 months to find one online as they were impossible to get since Covid had just started hitting, they shipped it to us at no charge from CA. Hers is not a work truck, mine is, so mine gets much heavier usage. But that's fine, that's why I bought it.

So yes, it's a good engine. They have a bit upgraded version of the 3.0 coming out in the 2023 models, a little more torque and HP.

The fuel cost difference have about cured me of wanting a diesel. Routinely run $1.75/gallon more in my area, plus the considerable premium you spend up front. I'm not sure it makes economic sense anymore and the better mileage is eaten in higher fuel and maintenance costs.

Diesel is about a buck more per gallon here, has been that way for a while. I think I am still ahead on the difference with the 3.0 diesel in fuel costs, but if so not by much. It was really nice that first year I owned this 3.0 diesel when diesel was cheaper than gas.

I still prefer this small diesel to any gas engine truck I have ever owned though. Way better pulling torque, and quicker to boot. For my needs and usage, this fits the bill perfectly. At some point I hope they start making a true hybrid truck - gas engine as a generator only (not for propulsion at all - as a generator and/or running heat/AC/misc accessories), with the electric motor for propulsion. IMO that is the best mix if they would just make one. They seem to want to go all electric, though, and that just doesn't work for someone needing a work truck, in a cold climate like MT where I live. 100 mile range at best pulling a trailer - not gonna work. Probably more like 50 mile range in the mountains in the cold/snow/ice using heat, etc. Battery tech is not even close to making a usable work truck in electric only yet.

Have a buddy that after having the duramax and power stroke, transitioned to an F-350 with gas and said he gets same mileage and better towing now. IDK, as it is just his claim, but he has had a 2004 F250, 2014 Sierra 2500 w-6.6 that he loved, and 2019 F350 with the 6.7 power stroke, but got offered over purchase last year, and traded for Ford’s new gas engine with the F350, and said they’d have to offer him crazy money to ever go back. Says he loved his diesels, and had them for nearly 20 years, but his new baby is much better and easier to own.
I know nothing of the Duramax 3.0, and am sure it is great, but I just don’t personally know if the value is there. If you aren’t pulling anything, I don’t know why you get a diesel anymore. If you can’t get 10 years out of a gas engine, you probably aren’t taking care of your vehicle

I have no real input on bigger diesels in 3/4 ton or bigger. I know some guys who have them and love them. Mostly Duramax/GM guys, but some Ford and Ram guys, too. I just did some work for a guy on his house who has a very nice 2016 blacked out (nicely done, nice looking) 3/4 ton Silverado diesel. He just got it deleted and says he gets 26 mpg on the hwy. Dunno if that is exagerrated or not though.

For me, I don't want anything bigger than a half ton. Mine is my work truck and daily driver. Over all of the last 27 years in business, I only owned one 3/4 ton, and that was a 2000 Ram with a 5.9 ltr gas engine. 7 to 8 mpg regardless if you were pulling a 12,000+ lbs trailer or just going down the hwy. Stupid bad gas mileage. After that I went back to 1/2 ton. Not like they got great mileage for my usage either, but better than that 2000 Ram.

I can tell you I never wanted a diesel, but this little 3.0 so far (about 35K miles) has been great (no jinx). In all ways it is just a better engine than anything I have ever owned before. There is a reason this engine is becoming more prevalent and wanted in GM vehicles - it is a very nice, quiet, modern turbo-diesel without the stink or gravelly rattle box sound (some love that sound, I don't). I don't even think they charge a premium for it at this point - or at least that is what I read - haven't checked.

In any case, buy and drive what fits your needs and what you want. This one will work for me for quite a while and I have been more than pleased with it.
