What’s the buy out?
Nebraska is owed 5 mill if he leaves. This article lays out a nice picture actually.

Franklin’s buyout - 48 million
Rhules buyout - 5 million
Rhules new contract- 8 years and 10-12 million a year .. 80-96 million.

Is Rhule worth a potential 148 million dollars?

I agree, and this makes me wonder if there was something else going on behind the scenes

I'm betting that in the next week there will be some really interesting articles citing anonymous sources
I think we’ve already seen some fuckiness starting to come out with that “adidas forced the firing” story (complete and utter bs). What I think likely happened was big boosters were getting sick of being the black sheep of the top dog schools, when in reality they were never on the same level as OSU, Michigan and now Oregon.

Now Kraft is forced to try to convince a coach with better job than PSU and a better resume than James Franklin to come get fired after two bad games. Kraft and his hire are already dead men walking

PSU isn't paying $48 million. with the offset from any subsequent jobs Franklin takes they will probably end up paying $20 million or less

FIFY.

😉

I truly hope so. I just don’t factor in his comments made during the season at all.

December 31, 2019;

I plan on that,” Rhule said of returning to Baylor, via Alex Scarborough of ESPN.com. “I certainly think I will be.”

“One thing people don’t realize is coaches, we pick up our families,” Rhule said. “We rip them out of their homes. We rip them out of the places that they are. Sometimes you do that until you get to a point where you find happy. You shouldn’t mess with happy.

He even signed a big extension. Left for the panthers a couple weeks later
Let me be clear. I agree with you. I'm not naive - I don't trust CFB HCs as far as I can throw em. He could absolutely leave for PSU no matter what he says.

My only point is that Rhule is going to have to do a HELL of a lot more lying in this situation than he did at Temple or Baylor. His media commitments are like 150x more at Nebraska than he had at either Temple or Baylor.

So if he's IN on PSU he's going to have to keep that charade up through another 50 media appearances between now and the end of the season. At Temple and Baylor he probably talked to press 1x/week and after each game. This is an entirely different deal.

I'm not saying he WON'T lie/misdirect his way through it....I'm just saying if that's his tactic, he's gonna have to earn it. Bc the press commitments for him here are massive and never ending.

I'm not saying he would, but I'd make a call.

If he goes 9-3 and Gumps are calling for his head, maybe he'd want to get back to one of his most desired head coaching spots instead of dealing with the shenanigans of being on the hot seat in 2026
If we go 9-3 only trolls are calling for his head

If Rhule leaves we should go unhinged

HC Dana Holgorsen
OC Kliff Kingsbury (pay him stupid money)
QB/assistant HC Mike Gundy
RB Jamar Mozee
WR Shorts
TE Neal Brown
OL Bill Bedenbaugh (unemployed after Venebels gets shot canned for going 1-5 to end the season)
OL bitch - Raiola

DC Dave Aranda (gets fired from Baylor finally)
DL Terry Braden
DL/recruiting Ed O
LB/swag officer Ruffin Mcneil(get him to unretire)
LB Zach Arnett
DB Dave Merritt

ST Mike Ekeker

Just buy into the madness

If you are Kraft and you want Rhule as your top pick, you spend a few weeks leaking names like Urban, Cignetti, Dillingham and whoever else to make it at least look like you are making the effort, then the fanbase will start getting restless and suddenly Rhule looks a lot better.

the fact that Rhule is being mentioned so prominently from the start makes it seem like this is agent-driven

I think in this era any savvy AD has to consider the fan psychology with any move like this. it wasn't that long ago that Greg Schiano was going to be hired at Tennessee and the fan reaction killed the deal.
If it weren't for TPB we might have Monkey Tits as our HC right now.

What would be too much money for us to keep Rhule? Should we be paying him $12m a year moving forward? He’s going to get a raise this off season. Right now he makes 8.5 which ranks 15th. Next year will be 9.5, going up by 1 every year until hitting 12.5 in 2029. I think those annual escalations are higher than normal. For example, Lane is flat at 9. Brian Kelly slight changes but fairly flat at 10. 9.5 would make him 10th. If he’s getting a raise, and we’re in a bidding war, then he’s probably close to 12. That would basically make him the 3rd highest paid coach. Is that what we want to be doing with our budget? Is Rhule worth that? Maybe someone else? Open question, I don’t have an opinion yet.

ND got 20 mill because of playoff run last year and didn't have to share with anyone. tOSU got around 3 million from combined B1G teams payout in playoffs, but then that got distributed. Then 15 million to ND for it's media rights deal. Not sure about total revenue, but guessing it's a bunch higher than PS and lower than a tOSU or Texas.
Each B1G team got 2 1/4 for playoffs. 75-100 mil for TV contract.

ND got the 20 as you said and 67 mil from TV contracts. 50 for themselves and 17 from ACC.

So on a year they make the championship game they get about the same maybe a little more as a B1G team. Years they don't make the playoff they're a little less.

Not much different.

Per Google ND athletic dept total revenue was about 225 mil. Penn St was 221 mil.

Nebraska was 205. Ohio St 255. Texas 332. Georgia 242.

OR… Rhule got a text from his bff and was already aware of the impending news.
See, that's what I think too. Rhule has a reason for everything he does. I think he knew the announcement was coming on JF and he wanted to reassure Nebraska peeps who can read between the lines.

Maybe I am misremembering, but when the search for our coach was happening he tweeted a picture of his 3 dogs on the beach and I could swear the first letter of each dog spelled out GBR and some people picked up on it.

Or its wishful thinking/hoping cuz I want him to stay. 🤣

there's no way PSU has more money than ND

also, is ND bound to the revenue sharing numbers that the P4 conferences have agreed to, or could they choose a higher revenue share if they want?
I didn't mean to imply they had more money. Just under the assumption Penn St would over pay and Notre Dame is too pompous for that. Notre Dame let Brian Kelly go but maybe that had to do with killing the kid or something else.
