Just around 24 hours before the 2025 class puts pen to paper, legally binding commits to the program of their choice. We've got the latest on the 19 current commits in Nebraska's class after staff changes, the impact of Tony White's departure, defensive transfers and three remaining targets.

Impact of Tony White's departure

If you couldn't tell by the reactions we posted to the Insider's Board on Monday, Tony White's departure has had little effect on the 2025 defensive commits. All have re-affirmed their pledge to the Huskers except Kade Pietrzak, who is typically reserved, but still expected to stick with the program as things stand. Nebraska's staff did an excellent job staying proactive and keeping commits in the loop through this process. It certainly helps that there's some confidence building that Terrance Knighton could potentially stick around. Even if he doesn't, as things stand, Nebraska is on track to sign all 19 prospects currently committed to the Huskers.

Now looking ahead to 2026, White does affect Nebraska's board a good bit, and if Knighton does leave, the Huskers will have to reset the board. That's to be expected any time there''s a coordinator/position coach change. Garret McGuire's demotion likely sees a drastic adjustment to Nebraska's wide receiver board in 2026 as Holgorsen finds his guys. For now, finishing off the 2025 class and assessing needs in the transfer portal is the priority.

On the transfer portal departures

Nebraska losing five defensive contributors over the past two days coincided with Tony White's departure, but that doesn't necessarily mean all four are following White to Tallahassee. Sources indicate there's been some tampering with Nebraska's roster, and a few more departures could happen as a result. No program in the country can clutch pearls over roster tampering, everyone does it, everyone is a victim of it, you can't complain if you're also benefitting from it. That being said, entering the portal isn't the same as leaving the program. Remember, Jimari Butler technically entered the portal before Rhule arrived and opted to stick with the program after a few short days, if not hours, in the portal.

Even if White's departure isn't the reason some of these guys entered the portal, I'd expect Florida State to pursue Butler, Umanmielen, Gbayor and Thompson, they have a need at linebacker and White would like to keep Butler with him as the vocal leader of his defensive front. Should Nebraska lose those three and 2-3 other key contributors from the defensive line, I'd expect Rhule and Co. to be even more aggressive in attaining trench talent out of the portal. Losing Gbayor and Thompson, even with the talented linebacker class coming in, could see the Huskers look to add a veteran or two to the room.

Entering the weekend, confidence was at an all-time high in Nebraska's chances of flipping four-star wide receiver Cortez Mills from Oklahoma. That confidence remained through the weekend and then took a slight hit on Monday. The Sooners securing Ben Arbuckle as offensive coordinator and retaining Emmett Jones as wide receivers coach saw the first dip in confidence from those on Nebraska's end, but it was just a brief dip Monday evening, as I'm told the Huskers have gone all in, essentially doing their part to "leave no doubt."

He'll make a final decision on Wednesday.

Terry has a time set for his commitment, scheduled to announce his decision at 8:15 A.M on Wednesday. This recruitment remains tighter than Texas would like it to be. Sources on the Longhorns' end remain confident he'll stay home, but for the first time since the spring, those in the Lone Star State could realistically see Nebraska being the pick. I'm told this decision won't come down to NIL, Texas has a more competitive offer than Nebraska does, but the Longhorns also hold an edge in practically every other factor Terry is weighing as he makes this decision. Garret McGuire's demotion and the uncertainty of his status with the program doesn't help Nebraska in this recruitment, but securing Dana Holgorsen for the foreseeable future helps counter that a bit, as does the hire of Daikiel Shorts. I'd expect Rhule to lead Nebraska's final pitch on Tuesday, with Shorts potentially assisting. Still continue to give the edge to Texas, but we will know for certain in less than 24 hours.

The addition of Daikiel Shorts to the staff has some wondering whether Nebraska will make a late run at flipping Kentucky four-star wide receiver commit Dejerrian Miller. We're told that won't happen, Nebraska has had an offer out and if they wanted him earlier they could have had him. The Huskers have bigger fish at wide receiver and if they miss on both, they'll turn their attention to the portal. They're looking for instant-impact contributors.

We hinted things were trending this way over the weekend and sure enough, Loftin re-affirmed his commitment to Florida State on Monday and will sign with the Seminoles. Some saw Bear Tenney's decommitment as an imminent sign the four-star was going to flip and stay home, but Tenney's decision had little to do with Loftin and more to do with Nebraska managing roster numbers.

Letting Loftin leave the state is disappointing, but if there's a position Nebraska can afford to miss out on right now, it's tight end, with the depth they currently have at the position and the evolution of that position in Holgorsen's offense. They have a loaded board in 2026 and have a growing board of elite prospects at the position in 2027 as well

I’m sure it’s been said in here but in the last couple weeks, Nebraska actually stopped recruiting Loftin. His family stuff is a A+ shit show. It’s not worth it.

The FSU commit is odd. Coach going into custer’s last stand in his freshman season and new OC at this time. What is he committing too? Maybe a high NIL which has been mentioned he would go wherever the highest Nil bag was. Who knows but if he wasn’t going to be happy at NU that is a position that won’t be a problem to find players at.
