I guess the Mavs must have really hated Luka and thought he was a lost cause.

Short term improvement for the Mavs, long term improvement for the Lakers.
I don't think it makes the Lakers better this season since the loss of Davis is a huge hole in the middle and on defense. Luka can be the face of the franchise once LeBron is gone and is only 25.

Why didn’t the Mavs subtly float it out through the back channels they would be open to unloading Luka is my only question? They could have probably got more in the process.

If Luka wants the same type of longevity, he'll need to do that soul searching now. I don't think he can dad bod his way through the next 5-10 seasons and remain at this level.

EDIT: I don't want to piss off my friends who have deep and direct ties to NBA stuff, so deleting most of that.
Luka wanted the Lakers for years, and only the Lakers. Was not going to re sign with the Mavs. I may expand on this later a bit.
