With College Football Playoff change looming, a 12-team model leads the way

Yahoo Sports spoke to more than a dozen stakeholders Monday on every side of the playoff decision – university officials, athletic directors, media executives and others around college sports. Amid those conversations, a surprise emerged — officials on campuses, in conference offices and in the television world have expressed an openness toward a 12-team playoff as the most likely result.

While it’s unfair to say momentum has built toward a 12-team playoff before models have been presented to the commissioners or presidents, the 12-team model has emerged as the favored outcome over the eight-team playoff within the industry.

“The reason that you go to 12 is because you can develop the road of least resistance toward a good result,” said a high-ranking college official with knowledge of the process.

I used to hate the idea of more than 4, but I’m on board. Bowl games outside the CFP are boring anyway. Expand the field, have more meaningful post season games, provide broader access, and still puts a premium on being in the top 4 (regular season stays important). I’m all for 12 teams.

I'm torn. IF, and I do mean IF CFB players retain their current "amateur" status, then I'm against it. It's pretty clear the universities, conferences, NCAA and sports programming content providers all benefit BIGLY from their labors. And adding a few more games increases the likelihood for injury and wear-n-tear on their bodies that doesn't show up until they're older. As an older guy, I say this with certainty.

HOWEVER, if they're about to become paid athletes, then it's part of the gig (NFL and alt-league proving grounds) and their compensation should be adjusted accordingly.

As in most things in life, follow the money and you'll find the answers waiting for you there. My $0.02 worth.

Who would have made in it 2020?

Big 10: OSU
Big 12: Oklahoma
ACC: Clemson
SEC: Alabama
P16: Oregon
G5: Cincinnati

then who?

Notre Dame
Texas A&M
Indianus
Georgia
Cockeye State
Florida

coastal carolina?

For money and entertainment value more teams are better. In reality only 3-4 teams are capable of winning it. It’s Bama and maybe another sec team, Clemson, and OSU every year. The rest don’t have a prayer.

I'm ok with 12 but I'd like to see them make it a requirement to win your conference to get a top 4 bye.

Adds some big time intrigue to the title games and prevents 1 conference from having multiple byes.
