I definitely think there's an argument that the recruiting calendar moving up is impacting evaluations. it used to be common for players to get offered based on senior film, take visits in dec/jan, then sign in february. the recruiting services are starting their rankings when these kids are freshmen and sophomores, which means they are 14-16 years old. sometimes the best players are obvious at that age, but we've all seen guys we knew in high school who hit puberty early and never got any bigger or better after that age.
I actually think that's where a lot of Frost's 4 star failures came from. since it's rare for a player to lose stars once they have them, you end up with quite a few 4 star players that none of the elite teams want after seeing the lack of development. then when you get close to signing day a lazy coach like Frost will look at who's left uncommitted and take their commitment without wondering why everyone else backed out. the result is what we've seen the past 5 years where the 4 star recruits bolster the recruiting class rankings, but lack the talent and/or character to succeed in P5.
Rhule's approach reminds me of Callahan's to a degree. Billy C signed some highly ranked recruits, but he was big on measurables and was looking for players who projected into having NFL-type athletic potential
