New Commit Callen Barta is N

This should jump start their recruitment. The Cockeye OL wasn’t a take there cause they were full at ol. The Texan has excellent measurable for a kid that size. If Rhule can develop like he has in the past, we will have some dogs.
Well apparent they’re aren’t worth a shit if they’re not “dawgs” so…

I may have missed it in a prior post, but is Callen related to Gary Barta?

I know Rhule is supposed to be this master developer of talent and I really hope that to be the case but I think with some of these kids we are reaching

How would we feel about this if Frost signed this kid?

For good reason - Frost would not have done the legwork to determine whether the offer was a good one
I've been wondering if Frost evaluated this many kids when he was HC. If he did, it was quiet and not reported like we are seeing now.

I love that they have been at these camps and hosting the FB camps. They are putting their money where their mouths were when they said they want to be known for having the best camps in the country.

One thing that this does is it signals that if you come to Nebraska and camp and you test well that you will have an opportunity to earn a scholarship.

Imagine having Joe Burrow throw at your camp and you ignore him for a D-2 TE.

Imagine having (2) Elite 11 QB's in your backyard and you ignore them.

I get that people want more stars but man I am exhausted from these highly rated guys who are expected to be program changers and all we talk about is how we don't understand why they are leaving/riding the bench.

If Rhule makes a bowl year one then Nebraska will be on the right trajectory.

I get what you mean and understand that feeling.

Whether the kid or any of these kids will work out, I have no idea. But I'm not going to doubt a college coach that watches a kid in person, watches his film and then gives him a committable offer 6 months before NSD.

To me a reach is when you're taking kids just to fill a class in February.

I also think we need to get used to the idea of Rhule and staff identifying talent early. I realize these 2024 kids are not early but they were behind on the 2024 class no matter what. I'll be interested to see if 2025/2026 kids that get offered early by Rhule end up being highly recruited.

True. I'm hopeful that's all the case and these guys truly know what they're doing but I've thought that for like 20 years about our football team, coaches, etc. and we've seen how well that's gone

I think I might just have too much PTSD from it all

I definitely think there's an argument that the recruiting calendar moving up is impacting evaluations. it used to be common for players to get offered based on senior film, take visits in dec/jan, then sign in february. the recruiting services are starting their rankings when these kids are freshmen and sophomores, which means they are 14-16 years old. sometimes the best players are obvious at that age, but we've all seen guys we knew in high school who hit puberty early and never got any bigger or better after that age.

I actually think that's where a lot of Frost's 4 star failures came from. since it's rare for a player to lose stars once they have them, you end up with quite a few 4 star players that none of the elite teams want after seeing the lack of development. then when you get close to signing day a lazy coach like Frost will look at who's left uncommitted and take their commitment without wondering why everyone else backed out. the result is what we've seen the past 5 years where the 4 star recruits bolster the recruiting class rankings, but lack the talent and/or character to succeed in P5.

Rhule's approach reminds me of Callahan's to a degree. Billy C signed some highly ranked recruits, but he was big on measurables and was looking for players who projected into having NFL-type athletic potential

even more recently, when most OVs were made in Sept/Oct/Nov and not June, kids' evaluations were partly driven by the April-July camps performances, and the services re-evaluated in August. Kids are taking OVs before that happens now.

Exactly. The calendar has moved up considerably. A late bloomer like Barta would have been identified at numerous camps , been offered and then invited to make an OV in September or October in the old system. Nobody is gonna leave the majority of their class for in season visits now. Big recruiting months are now spring football and summer camps. Watch....the in season will be for the unofficial visits with giant lists of '25 & '26 guys. I expect our '25 class to be the regular style Rhule class that we can expect.
