Is this an unusually large year for mid-season firings? Or is this just becoming standard practice these days?

Listening to the Cover 3 Podcast about this job..Bud Elliott is pretty plugged in at Auburn.

He says the top candidate is Lane Kiffin. After that Mark Stoops and Hugh Freeze. He thinks they'll likely interview Deion if they can't get Kiffin.

He doesn't think they'll hire someone that isn't from the southeastern footprint. Basically do the opposite of what Harsin was. So if they strike out with the top 3 names here are the names he mentioned:
Aranda
Lanning - Wouldn't that be something if Oregon lost another guy back to the southeast.
Grimes

He doesn't think Heupel would take the job. He also doesn't think Matt Rhule will be considered because he has no SEC ties. He didn't agree with that position that Auburn is going to take but he said that he doesn't think the fanbase would buy Matt Rhule as their coach. Crazy town over there.

FWIW it sounds like Bud thinks that Lane Kiffin would take the Auburn job. It's a much better job than Ole Miss because of the high school recruiting footprint and Auburn's willingness and ability to play the recruiting game.

Jamie Chadwell was brought up. Bud Elliott, Tom Fornelli and Chip Patterson all agreed that would be a great hire for Auburn but that they wouldn't do it because this hire is going to have Power 5 and SEC experience.

What's really going to be crazy is when a sitting power 5 head coach leaves his job mid season to start recruiting for his new job. Think that will happen?
Honestly, nothing would surprise me at this point.

Urban will probably go there and be in the playoff for the next 5 years.
