Mast Lifts Huskers Past Winthrop
Huskers.com

Lincoln – Behind a 31-point performance from Rienk Mast, Nebraska remained unbeaten with an 80-73 win over Winthrop Tuesday evening at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Mast hit a career-high seven 3-pointers, going 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, as he went 11-of-18 from the field and added five rebounds and four assists to pace four Huskers in double figures.

Cale Jacobsen and Braden Frager added 11 points apiece, while Pryce Sandfort added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, as Nebraska (7-0) shot 53 percent in the second half to overcome a 36-32 halftime deficit.

Leading 52-49 with 10:53 left, the Huskers seized control with a 15-5 spurt over the next 5:18 to build its larges lead of the night at 67-54. A Frager dunk got the run started before Mast scored the next 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Winthrop (3-4) made one last run, scoring eight straight points to cut a 72-61 deficit to 72-69 after Kareem Rozier’s 3-pointer with 1:45 left and force a Husker timeout.

Nebraska would take control as a driving basket from Sandfort, a defensive stop and a Jacobson stretched the lead back to 76-67 and NU held on for its 18th straight non-conference win.

Rozier led three Eagles in double figures with 14 points as Winthrop was held to 37.7 percent shooting.

The Huskers return to action Saturday afternoon when the Huskers host South Carolina Upstate. Tip is set for 1 p.m. (CT) and 300 Level tickets are available for purchase at huskers.com/tickets.

Postgame Notes
  • With the win, Nebraska extended its nation-leading win streak to 11 games, dating back to last season. The Huskers’ 11 consecutive victories ties for the sixth-longest win streak in school history and mark the first time since the 2010-11 season that Nebraska has had an 11-game winning streak.

  • The Huskers also increased their nation-leading streak to 18 consecutive non-conference victories.

  • Rienk Mast had 31 points for his third career 30-point game and first this season. Mast scored 22 of his game-high 31 points in the second half.

  • Mast was 7-of-10 from the 3-point line, setting a career high with seven 3-pointers. His seven 3-pointers tied for the most by a Nebraska player at Pinnacle Bank Arena. He tied the mark of Glynn Wattson Jr., who twice hit seven 3-pointers in a game inside PBA.

  • Mast's seven 3-pointers were the most by a Husker since Kobe Webster had seven at Northwestern on March 7, 2021.

  • NU had 21 assists in the game, marking the fourth time this season the Huskers have had 20 or more assists in a game this season. Tonight was also the second time this season that Nebraska has had 20-or-more assists and five-or-fewer turnovers in a game.

  • Nebraska made nine 3-pointers in the second half (9-of-16). That performance marked the fourth time this season the Huskers have made nine or more 3-pointers in a half.

  • The Huskers scored on 20 of their 33 second-half possessions, averaging 1.46 points per possession in the final 20 minutes to overcome a four-point halftime deficit.

  • Nebraska turned the ball over on each of its first two possessions of the game but then had only three turnovers over the game’s final 38:41.

  • Sam Hoiberg tied his career high with four steals. He also had five assists and only one turnover, giving him an assist-to-turnover ratio of 29-to-5 this season.

  • Cale Jacobsen finished with a career-high 11 points and tied his career-high with six rebounds.

  • Freshman Braden Frager made his first career start in tonight’s game and finished with 11 points. Frager is the Husker freshman to start for NU since the 2023 Big Ten Tournament (Jamarques Lawrence)
