Well, considering the greatest Sumo of all time is 6’3” and 350, that isnt typical of most guards In the NFL, and if you look at the majority of Sumo it is not hard to understand why most would be bad fits for football.I was super into it in middle
School. But that’s been nearly 20 years. It is an interesting culture for sure. The physicality is fun to watch. I’m surprised no sumos go the football route as they have a superior level of strength leverage and quickness.
most are not even 6’ and those above tend to be very hefty or slow.
Plus, it’s worth noting that the best Sumo make far more in Japan than they ever could in football. The top level guys make a couple hundred thousand a year in salary, but that is before the endorsements and prize money. In their prefectures, they make sick bank from endorsements. Money that would never be available in the US unless they were the best. Japanese culture would also shun them upon their leaving for the US, and they wouldn’t see a dime from their local businesses.
