Portal WR Alante Brown commits to Michigan State
Michigan State adds portal WR target Alante Brown over Colorado, Cincinnati, and 18 others.
JUSTIN THIND8 mins7Neatly a month after Michigan State saw its leading returning receiver Keon Coleman enter the transfer portal, the Spartans turned to the portal to add a pass-catcher for the upcoming season. Former Nebraska WR Alante Brown announced his decision to commit to MSU on social media today. The former four-star Top247 prospect was once committed to Michigan State as a high school prospect in 2019, and now finds he way back to the Spartans to close out his college career.
As of two weeks ago, Brown had 20 total transfer portal offers including Colorado and Cincinnati. During his first season with Nebraska, he had the fastest forty-yard dash time, per then-HC Scott Frost. As a sophomore in 2022, Brown started 10 games for the Huskers, racking up 16 catches for 191 yards. Nebraska finished 8th in the B1G in passing yards (context: MSU was 6th), so that didn't help Brown's stats. With him ideally playing in a better passing offense and being a year older, Brown should certainly out-produce his sophomore self.
In his prep school highlight reel, which is embedded below, Brown shows a great speed and gadget-use versatility. Bubble screens, quick slants, jet sweeps, and all other creativity is fully on the table. His high school team in 2019 used him as an option-QB to get him the ball immediately on every play. As a whole, it doesn't appear that Brown will be a high-volume alpha receiver like Jayden Reed was, but he possesses a few similar traits and will at least make the room more balanced.
While Tyrell Henry is expected to be a guy that can take the top off of defenses during his MSU career, a more seasoned option like Brown gives MSU more comfort and security when it comes to that player type. In the best case scenario, both Henry and Brown end up starting, with Henry being a deep-threat and Brown being the YAC receiver used in the quick game, with these roles alternating constantly to keep defenses guessing.
