It is normal, but this is a unique approach. Fire him, then say “wait, we didn’t fire you, you walked out so NOW we’re firing you for cause.” And when that has no legs, “actually, it was that you’re extra marital affairs shined a bad light so we’re firing you for cause because of that.”

What it’s going to end up causing is a completely guaranteed contract with no term for cause clauses if they are going to hire anyone with another offer. They are showing the market they don’t operate in good faith. Hopefully it means they get stuck with a desperate retread.
