You gotta give him at least 7-8 years to build this thing back and you have to understand that each 4-8 season is improvement and part of the process. Have patience, trust the process, and they can be right back to 6-6 or 7-5 in 3 or 4 short years…

I think it ends up like Frost. I‘d be surprised if he makes it past October 2026.

Is this normal to try to negotiate down a buyout? Would think if LSU tries to weasel they’re way out of it that it would affect the quality of coaches that would be interested.

It is normal, but this is a unique approach. Fire him, then say “wait, we didn’t fire you, you walked out so NOW we’re firing you for cause.” And when that has no legs, “actually, it was that you’re extra marital affairs shined a bad light so we’re firing you for cause because of that.”



What it’s going to end up causing is a completely guaranteed contract with no term for cause clauses if they are going to hire anyone with another offer. They are showing the market they don’t operate in good faith. Hopefully it means they get stuck with a desperate retread.

Weren’t there reports out that they even sent him some initial offers of paying him X% lump sum rather than yearly payments? That’s the thing that really makes them look bad about “we didn’t actually fire you “.

His contact has offset language, so the lowered buyout removes that. It's not a bad move for Kelly if he wants to keep coaching, but at his age he might want to retire

Yeah this appears to be bad faith and LSU is in breach of contract.

And it just doesn’t make business sense on LSU’s part IMO. Absent some clearly slam dunk argument for termination for cause, you’re just making the job less attractive for anyone else. All this plus the governor stuff just makes this job seem radioactive IMO.

It's going to be interesting to see who all crashes out during this coaching search cycle. LSU is the most obvious and first one to go straight for the coaching world equivalent of going on Jerry Springer but I don't think they will be the last ones.

I'd you believe the rumors, LSU also had a PI following Kelly to try to find a reason to close the contract with the morals clause. They will and up settling for the full amount just to keep that from becoming public in court if it's true

PSU seems like a good candidate too. That whole thing feels a bit Solichy to me, but I’m not sure if there was a strong faction of PSU fans wanting to keep Franklin.

That feels like a move that a competent AD makes if you've got someone agreed to replace him already. They've been too solid of a program to risk an actual coaching search. But maybe their AD isn't competent
