I'm a sicko, so I made this chart detailing the road to 105. Feel free to comment on anything I may have missed. But we still have a lot of guys to cut, 28 to be specific, to get down to 105. And even more than that because we're probably still going to add guys from the portal.

Guys crossed out have entered the portal. Guys in red are new additions via the portal.

Since the limit doesn't hit till next academic year (and is still preliminary), and the portal is going to be jammed with guys getting processed, it's possible some dudes are going to stick around until the end, either trying to move up for a roster spot, or on the hope that there's some stay/change in the House settlement.

Probably gonna have a lot of names that nobody has called just quietly drop off the roster, though.

Great chart. Easy to read and follow

I wish my excel stuff would post like that. That’s great to be able to navigate the file so easily and the view is helpful.

I’ve been debating putting energy in a roster management post so I’ve been reserving a lot of my thoughts in the event I ever get that energy. But a couple nuggets I’ll drop here (of note a lot of this is reading between the lines of what’s been said publicly and how we can make sense out of seemingly nonsensical information we’ve gathered):

1. There is evidence that we aren’t managing against a 105 man roster. We may end up with 105 but there could be 15-20 players that aren’t really in our plans and are just practice squad players. Hopefully I’ll talk more on this soon but you all are good at extrapolating out what this could mean in the various dimensions of roster management.

2. We are going to look by position in how we are allocating roster spots. So it’s helpful to know where we may be heavy and where we may be light by those numbers.

3. I’m breaking the roster down into three phases, and those phases have numbers allocated to them by position. If the staff hasn’t put you in a phase then they are having difficult conversations with you.

I wasn't sure about him. Did he redshirt this year?
He played 4 seasons at northwestern 20-23 and I believe only one game at Nebraska this year. 2020 would be a Covid year and I think he could technically RS 2024 and come back for year 6 but he also walked on senior day.

The practice squad model makes a lot of sense. At a school like Nebraska you probably could find 15-20 kids willing to pay tuition who could reasonably help out on scout team

Why would it? NAIA schools are 4-year institutions.
I think the same argument would apply. The NCAA is the only game in town for NIL in a meaningful way and restricting his ability to take advantage of that because he played in some totally unrelated league is depriving him of economic opportunities available to others.

Edit: turns out it already applies! See below

Does that JUCO rule affect NAIA?

The injunction is for all non-NCAA athletes, which would include NAIA athletes. If the NCAA doesn't fight it, NAIA players could play 5 years (10 semesters) on NAIA level and 5 years on NCAA level.

And speaking to a couple NAIA coaches, they think eventually the opposite will be true too. A 5-year NCAA player, could still have all 10 semesters of eligibility at a NAIA school.

NCAA already granted eligibility for these athletes next season.

“The NCAA Division I Board of Directors granted a waiver to permit student-athletes who attended and competed at a non-NCAA school for one or more years to remain eligible and compete in 2025-26,”

I'm picturing a 26-27 year old former NCAA athlete still living out his glory days at an NAIA school, mauling 18 year olds. Will truly be the college permajock golden days.

That already happens at the NAIA level. The average player age of Keiser University out of Florida, NAIA champs in 2023 and runner ups in 2024, was just under 25.
