I don't think it was a 'show' offer because we didn't think he'd take it. It was high so we'd have a chance

Edwards is fine, but he also played at a lower level (UConn) and only has one year left, not 3. Edwards' games with over 100 yards rushing were Delaware, Air Force, Central CT, Ball St, Florida Atlantic, and Army. Not exactly B1G level competition. Barthel was actually his position coach at UConn in 2022, so one would expect he is familiar with the guy.

Makhi Hughes seemed like a great get by Oregon after 2 huge years at Tulane, but he barely played at Oregon. He is similar in that if you go back and look at his stats from Tulane, he had 1 - 100+ yard game against P4 competition in 5 chances over 2 years.
These are my favorite types of straw man arguments because it conveniently ignores things like the last time Michigan State took a running back from UConn in Nate Carter he ran for 1300 yards in his 2 years at MSU on dogshit teams and now is on the Atlanta Falcons. Edwards is very good. He’s going to be good for Mich State.

Keelan Marion for Miami started at UConn, EJ was our best RB last year, finished as an All American and barely even had other FBS offers when we took him. Mizzou took a D2 RB and made him all SEC. Pretty sure the stats bare out the most effective transfers into P4 programs come from G5s or FCS as overlooked guys from HS or bounce backs from earlier in their careers

man I would hate to be an attorney. a contract is a contract unless it's not an enforceable contract, in that case it wasn't really a contract to begin with. the only time a contract is worth the paper it's printed on is when you're an assistant to the assistant defensive line coach for an nfl team, in which case you get sentenced to jail if you say you're taking another job in a few weeks. how do yall live like this?
You can get paid a lot of money to just tell clients “maybe, it depends”. That’s how I live mostly.

Nelson had 15 carries for 59 yards prior to the Utah game. I would need a really good explanation from the coaches why they feel good going into next year when they didn't trust him enough to give him more than 1.25 carries per game.
Convenient argument to remove the only game where he was the #1 back to prove your point because it doesn't fit your narrative. Because in that game you could see a back who did a really good job of hitting the holes decisively. Alas, I'll provide my argument with the entire scope of the season.

Nelson was purposefully not used for a not insignificant portion of the season due to internal issues, not football. Ives was hurt and Mozee had just converted to RB from WR. They leaned heavily on EJ because of this and he was doing well. I can remember a few games where there was a lot of frustration that EJ didn't get enough carries to try to establish a real rushing attack early in the season. This would imply that having a #2 back get significant carries was unnecessary.

Then when DR went down and it was obvious that LaQueef was terrible, you had to lean on EJ because you were not able to develop an established #2 while establishing your #1. Turns out that you never had to go to your #2.

I personally, think EJ is OVERVALUED. I think he ran incredibly hard and was tough to bring down. I think he did a good job. I also know he left a lot of yards on the field due to his vision. He would often cut back into defenders rather than to the open field. I also think that the offensive line was an extremely good group in run blocking. I do NOT think that a RsFr would be as durable as a Jr, so I do not think that a RB room void of EJ would have been as effective last season.

I literally expect ZERO people to agree with me on this. I'm not against bringing in a RB, but I don't think it's imperative as most do.

I didn't remove that game to fit the narrative. I don't take much away from bowl games anymore.

But if we need to include that game, I'd point out that Utah gave up the following rush yards in the six games prior to playing us:

BYU - 202 yards
Colorado - 38 yards
Cincinnati - 206 yards
Baylor - 133 yards
Kansas State - 472 yards
Kansas - 290 yards

So, I'm not going to put much value on Nelson's 88 yards in this game (when Utah was without their best defender as well) as a reason to think we shouldn't go after a more proven RB for 2026.

Tim Verghese shares insider intel on Nebraska football hosting an unnamed SEC interior offensive lineman with guard starting experience for a visit on January 8, 2026, accelerating efforts after Jaheim Buchanan's commitment to TCU.
The update highlights Nebraska's urgent OL rebuild in the active transfer portal window (January 2-16), following recent additions like South Carolina's Tree Babalade to bolster depth.
The post's image captures LSU's #55 Khayree Lee Jr. in a game, a recent portal entrant fitting the SEC IOL profile, though his playing time as a redshirt freshman suggests emerging rather than extensive starting reps.

Actually #65 Grok
