I've been saying this all season. Specifically Ty, he ate doubles teams on every play last season and was consistently causing pressure and moving the pocket on his own. If you had Ty at nose this year with Nwaneri and Davis/McCullough on the edges then the defense looks dramatically better.
You have to go into the portal and find another Ty Robinson. I don't believe and won't listen to anyone that tells me that kind of guy isn't in the portal. He wasn't some unicorn that went top 5 in the draft. He was a solid DT that did his job consistently and didn't get pushed around on the LOS.

By stopping the run and not allowing Minnesota to sustain long drives that kept our offense off the field and out of rhythm.

You’re not wrong, but we weren’t getting another Ty or even a Nash in the portal. That’s the real problem. Those guys aren’t available on the open market. You’re either taking a flyer on a guy you hope can get you somewhere with a little improvement (Jeudy transferring in from A&M) or a lower level guy who’s flashed but against lessor competition. Neither of those situations are typically going to result in Robinson level of play.
We’re somewhat stuck in that we’ve got to recruit and develop and take occasional flyers on guys to plug holes, not fill full time multi year roles. That’ll flip a bit if/when we get back to relevant.

Something that sounds plausible on the surface but in reality is just bullshit. The blame for the offense sucking is 100% on the offense, not the defense.

I'd only disagree with you saying those guys aren't in the portal. Here's a list of DTs that were in the portal last year that were significant contributors on good teams this year.
They exist, we just need to spend the money to get them.

I'm agree with you. My wording definitely wasn't great. I will say that that the offense could have succeeded more by gaining more of a rhythm on the field. But that loss has so much surrounding with with all of the talk of Rhule and Penn St. as well.

UCF to Texas Tech.
10 tackles 2.5 sacks in ‘25
Georgia to USC to Oregon. Don’t know what he’s making in NIL, but he’s got 16 tackles and half a sack.
Syracuse to Texas. 3 tackles in ’25
USF to LSU. 16 tackles 2 sacks.
Spend whatever money is required to get one or two guys from this group expecting Robinson level performance? I don’t see it. You’re also talking about all going to teams that are currently at a higher level in the college football hierarchy than Nebraska is, including even freaking Texas Teach. We can say what we want, but that matters.
I’m not saying having one of these guys wouldn’t have helped. It certainly would have. As much as I like our youth in that room, it was a huge problem for us in ’25.

Yes, the offenses failures are theirs to own.
What does change is play calling and flexibility if your opponent is playing with a lead and effectively shortening the game by possessing the ball for long stretches. Your play calling starts to push or rush things, versus taking what’s given, even if that’s in smaller chunks or something different than what you want or thought you’d be able to do. Air Force won many football games against better opponents by possessing the ball longer and forcing an opposing offense out of their comfort zone.

Here's Ty's career stats at Nebraska. Pretty comparable to his Junior year, which was still solid. I'm not saying they have to replicate his Sr. year single handedly. I'm saying go out and get someone who can eat space and not get pushed around. I don't need an interior DL to get me 7 sacks. I need them to hold their ground and not get pushed into the 2nd level like we've seen all season.

Not many of them in the portal annually, and those that are are heavily pursued. A lot harder to find a DT that can immediately contribute in the portal than it is to find a WR, and a whole lot more competition for them.

Why do we need to rationalize how we can blame the defense for the offense only scoring 6 points?
It's been like this all season, some weird aversion to criticizing the offense which is statistically the much worse unit.
Half the Big Ten teams Minnesota has played held them to fewer points than we allowed, and half gave up more points than we allowed. Meanwhile, every single Big Ten team that has played Minnesota has put up at least 20 points, except Nebraska (6 points).
Saying we'd have won with a stronger DL is just dumb. We'd have won if our offense wasn't complete dogshit.

I get that we’re not looking to replicate his monster Sr. year, but I don’t think anyone on the list is equal to his Jr year either.
I completely agree that we needed/need a body that was a much better block eater than anyone in the two deep.
I’m just saying we sign one of the guys you listed, spend a bunch of money (assuming we could outbid Tech, Texas, Oregon and LSU ) and what do we lose elsewhere? I’m assuming we spent all the NIL dollars we had and didn’t hold any back. Might not have gotten all the guys we thought were positions of need, but again, it’s not an Ala Carte system.

Offense sucked hard that game, no doubt.
Also seems fair to say that they'd have stood a better chance to score at least a bit more if the D didn't let MN own the time of possession & turn it into a rock fight where we only ran 61 plays.
I don't think we win it regardless, and I'd rate the offense below the defense that game, but it was also a 7-6 game early in the third quarter when Minnesota had a 98 yard, 9 minute drive against our D that was fresh & hadn't worked since before halftime. So the trajectory of that game was there for either unit to affect.

“Completely disappeared” apparently means making a great TD catch against Maryland, along with a massive catch on our game winning drive where be broke tackles to immediately get the drive going. It means 4 catches and 50 yards against USC.
He’s completely disappeared since TJ took over, because he’s not the primary read in the offense they’re running.
But don’t consider that. Trash the performance of one of our better offensive players, a guy who’s still out there blocking hard without getting any targets now.
Bitch about him. Complain that he’s not good enough for you. Find a way to twist the narrative in an unfavorable way against a home grown kid who walked on because he loves the team more than you can comprehend. It’s the only thing you know how to do.

Rhule is hard selling the O is all a prep for the NFL. I always hate these O’s. Just do what works in college and what players this age can handle. Maybe this is all part of the sell job to keep DR and keep him happy. Who knows.
