With locking Rhule in on a contract extension and seeing what we have on the roster so far I took a look at what we might need next year through recruiting and the transfer portal to take advantage of a third year QB and hopefully a stable coaching staff.

I broke it down looking at returning two deep, key losses, up and comers on the current roster, and holes we need to fill with the transfer portal.

Starting with the Offense.

QB
Returning: Dylan Raoila
Key Losses: None
Up and Comers: TJ Lateef
Portal: None

In a good spot here. I wouldn't mind seeing some packages for TJ Lateef to take advantage of his mobility.

RB
Returning: Emmet Johnson, Isaiah Mozee, Mekhi Nelson, and Kwinten Ives
Key Losses: None
Up and Comers: Jamarion Parker and Conor Booth
Portal: 1

I like Emmet but still don't feel great about this position. Mozee has shown me a little something to hope for and maybe Parker can get some carries in a bowl game. Probably time to cut some weight here like Ives.

WR
Returning: Nyziah Hunter, Jacory Barney, Quinn Clark, Cortez Mills
Key Losses: Dane Key
Up and Comers: Jeremiah Jones, Keelan Smith, Demitrius Bell
Portal: Maybe 1

Can you replace Key with what is on the roster and use your money to keep Hunter and everyone else on board. Jeremiah Jones is a really good athlete but I wonder if they take a look at him on defense.

TE
Returning: Luke Lindenmeyer
Key Losses: Heinrich Haarberg
Up and Comers: Carter Nelson and Mac Markway
Portal: 1

Not sure we will ever get Markway healthy and Nelson hasn't progressed like I hoped. Wouldn't mind having a transfer here.

OT
Returning: Elijah Pritchett and Gunner Gottula
Key Losses: Not sure I can say Teddy or Turner are key losses
Up and Comers: There have been some good recruits. Not sure who they see at OT. Maybe Preston Taumua or Brian Tapu.
Portal: 1

I think we for sure need to try for another OT in the portal. A lot depends on the growth of the younger guys.

OG
Returning: Tyler Knaak
Key Losses: Rocco Spindler
Up and Comers: Grant Brix, Gibson Pyle, and Jason MacieJczak
Portal: 1

Same as OT. Do you trust untested youth to protect Dylan? I think we need to go get at least 1 proven starter.

C
Returning: Justin Evans
Key Losses: None
Up and Comers: Jake Peters and Sam Sledge
Portal: 0

Overall the offense looks to be in good shape if we can get some OL help from youth and the portal. Second RB could really help move this offense forward.

Keeping Dylan, Johnson, and Hunter is priority number 1.

We need to definitely pay our skill players like EJ, Hunter, and Barney. DR can stay at his current rate because he’s shown nothing to get outbid for. Lateef is interesting, because we will need to pay him off just a little more.

1890 has got an interest situation on their hands in a month.

Fingers crossed we throw a good bag at Hunter to stay. It could be a really good crew if they can draw in a tackle or two in the portal. I'm not terribly worried about the guard spots, as I really like the young potential. Obviously if they aren't clicking in practice right now, tho, that can change things.

I’d add Barney to your must keep list.

Redshirt at Cal. He's 3 years out and draft eligible
Eligible & would get a shot for sure, but as a guy with <600 yards his first season, & on track for ~800 yards this season, he's a late round guy with upside that would be fighting a ton of prospects with more production.

Players make bad choices about the draft all the time, but I'd suspect he'd hear from coaches, scouts, & agents that he'd be way smarter to wait & put out another season of better numbers after Key graduates.

I don't know that it'd be a bad choice. He is phenomenal regardless of what the stats say. Seems like a guy who will go up boards once the tape goes on

Will be interesting to see how the lines develop.

Based on rn portal wise ideally I would say:
1-2 OT
2 OG
1 RB
1 TE
1 WR
