I am fine with adding a year or two, but is anyone else actually going after Rhule? If not, what are we doing?
You don't want to wait for someone to go after Rhule if you think he's your guy. It is a gamble but with the sheer volume of jobs that will be open this off-season you could go from sitting pretty with your coach and poaching other rosters to his intro press conference elsewhere in a hurry

I don't disagree with your general sentiment but it's a gamble both ways

Yeah, I guess I just don’t see Rhule as irreplaceable at this point no matter what else is going on in the coaching carousel, but I agree it could be risky if you actually think he is our guy

It comes down to change isn't costless. Do I have strong evidence Rhule is the guy? Not right now. Do I have strong evidence he isn't the guy? Also not right now.

But you are resetting an entire roster if you lose him to take on a guy who may or may not be the guy.

There is a huge cost savings - especially this year in particular- with stability.

A roster reset post Rhule would be extremely difficult.

Although we don't know if Rhule, as of yet, has the ability to push this program into the upper reaches of CFB, something we do know about him is that the players are strongly connected to him (and his staff). A loyalty the last two Nebraska coaches didn't get.

So, if he were to leave we would be looking at a possible mass exodus. One that would put the next coach at a significant disadvantage to deal with at the start of a new regime. Add the fact that signing day is early now, and the transfer portal is available and lots of teams are gonna be looking to supplement their rosters with big money and I could see Nebraska being put in a giant hole that would basically doom the next guy.

I dont understand why people are so upset about an extension. Lock up your coach, if he sucks we will fire him and pay him more and get the money to pay a new coach. Wgaf about money, its not yours.

This is the answer.

We joined the Big 10 to have the economic ability to fire and hire at will without needing a major booster bailout every time.

UNL gave up 100+ year long rivalries and having 5 conference schools closer to the borders of Nebraska than the nearest B1G school is to Lincoln now. (IowaCity)

Shit, I think if Nebraska stayed in the Big XII that we would have won the Big XII championship in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

TL;DR = Nebraska sacrificed everything by moving to the Big 10 just to get fuck you level money. We can extend Rhule and then fire him later if it don't work out and then pay big money for the next dude.
If nothing else we have the money to do it.

With enough financial mismanagement, they'll come for tax bucks eventually

For some reason I really doubt we'd be able to fire Rhule right now without a major booster bailout.
I presume that incremental B1G cash teat has already been milked dry

Anyone who thinks we will ever fire or need to fire Rhule has downs.
friends jerks GIF

Seems like bad business. Extend a coach and make our financial terms worse so when we have to part ways 3 years from now we get killed financially and the program takes more steps back.
Whatever additionally money we have to pay Rhule potentially will have minimal to no impact on the AD. We’re talking about a couple million dollars paid out over several years.

Nebraska’s AD is top 10 in terms of revenue. Funding a buyout won’t be an issue, especially since it’s paid out in multiple years with an offset clause likely.
