Offense+Defense vs. P4 (thru October 25th)

Drop off due to TW leaving or losing Ty and Nash?
Ty and Nash make a difference, but I don’t think this defense would be as bad at rush D if White were coaching. They’d be giving up more passing yards, though.

Side tangent:

Problem is, talk smack on James Williams all you want, but he had 5 sacks in about 100 snaps. MJ Sherman had 3.5 sacks. John Bullock had 4 sacks. Ty and Nash combined for 9 sacks. And our defense wasn’t even elite at sacking the qb last year.

So how do you replace it? They were resigned to replacing Ty and Nash’s production elsewhere I.e., Jack, LB, and DE. But we were told, by Butler, this D would be aggressive and put players in a position to do what they do best. Shavers was an example Butler used as someone they needed to let rush the passer because that’s what he’s best at.

Guess how many sacks Shavers has? Zero.

Dasan McCollough has 2 sacks. He’s probably on pace to replace Sherman’s production. Problem is he leads our team in sacks!

MWT and Nwaneri have 1.5 each.

Everyone else has 1 or .5.

Only 12 total sacks through 8 games. 111th in the country. To match last years pace we should be at 20.

We didn’t replace Ty, Nash and Butler’s production. William’s was able to eat on 3rd and long with Ty and Nash drawing all the attention imo.

Agreed, we’ve done nothing to replace their production. And I feel like Shavers should have about 4 sacks this year if he was being utilized the way Butler said he would be. Something ain’t right there. Same with McColllough. Feels like that dude should have 6 sacks by now. He’s beating his man or rushing free but he’s just not getting home. Maybe that changes these last 4 games?

It's kind of incredible how good the pass D has been for how bad they've been at pressuring the QB

James Williams is and was fucking awful and I think his 10 tackles and zero sacks this year help demonstrate that

Two excellent hires by Rhule with Ekeler and Holgo IMO, I would love to see where we would be in 2025 if we had those caliber of hires from the beginning.
I really don’t understand how we’re calling Holgorsen an excellent hire at this point.

He’s marginally better than Satterfield, but there are a ton of guys that clear that bar.

I think the alleged quality of his hire is down to name recognition.

OC is a position we could pretty clearly upgrade at.

Haha, yet his performance last year in ~100 snaps is outperforming any of our current starters who will end up with 4x as many snaps. So what’s that say?

Holgerson has too much history of knowing what he's doing. I would assume something else is the problem before Holgerson

They will need to up NIL, hit on some blue chips in the 2026 class then cut and fill with transfers however that would take funding in the $30-$40mm range which it seems we do not currently have.

I don’t think SSO has a vendetta against Butler, but he has been consistent that there’d be a drop off defensively. And he’s right.

White may have done better, but you have to remember Butler changed how we play philosophically. Butler is stopping the pass first, White was trying to stop the run first. Personally, I’d have preferred white’s philosophy against our schedule. We’re avoiding a lot of the elite QB’s in the league this year.

I’d have rather told Underwood he’s got to beat us with his arm. Same with Lindsey from Minnesota. If they hit a bunch of explosive passes then tip your cap, but I know White wouldn’t have given up the 4-5 explosive runs that killed us in those two games.

All that to say, it’s an interesting thought, but Butler is still doing enough to win. Dana is the one who needs to be questioned and pressed. We should’ve rushed for 250 against those guys yesterday. Barney Cotton could’ve figured that out.
His statements have all been centered around a conviction that we will miss Tony White, not that we will miss individual players. The implication has been that the defense will be worse this year because of the change at coordinator.

To be honest, I think Butler has exceeded expectations so far, given the limitations outside of the secondary (hell, even in the secondary we’re now starting two freshman).

One good six year safety and two lock down corners via the portal. Has been very go
"All unit power ratings have finally reached steady state. So you can expect less fluctuation week-to-week moving forward."

Let’s see… NU’s D rated 26 and FSU rated 46.

Is it? 4 of his 5 sacks came in 2 games. He had what, like 14 tackles? I’d gladly drop his sacks in exchange for someone that can function more broadly. He’s fucking bad, and this year demonstrates that.

I also don’t get the love for Tony White on here. He had good players last year and did pretty well although it felt like we surrendered a ton of 3rd and longs - his defense this year is awful. What has he shown this year that suggests if he’d stayed his defense would have done anything but take a giant step backward?
