I agree with this 1000%. Granted, I was never a D1 head coach, only a high school head coach, but the fun for me came in building the program, the relationships with players, administrators and parents (not all, some thought I was mentally retarded), but I was offered a small colleg job at one point, was in my 50’s and felt like leaving was foolish because I had already built the program, was maintaining it, and the pay raise was not worth the stress of building the program (did I still have the energy?). I was happy where I was, and retired there. No regrets.
Sometimes you find that fit and it is very satisfying. I don’t know if Matt Rhule thinks this or not, just my opinion, but the timing is everything if he was going to take the PSU job. He is walking into a mess he may not be able to fix. He may be better off waiting for the next opening and continue enjoying what he is building at NU.
