Gonna be an interesting Presser tomorrow for Rhule. He has been 100% transparent his entire time here. The podcast and mcafee as well, he cant run from answering.
It should be pretty easy to read him tomorrow.
Between his podcast and being on McAfee weekly he’ll either need to squash the rumors or he’ll stop doing those appearances.

People are in la la land if they think Rhule will admit anything anytime soon. It will be “I’m 100% Nebraska” until end of season.

Anything remotely hinting at considering leaving and rest of season is in deep trouble plus recruiting goes way off the deep end.

He will absolutely state he plans to stay. Just like he did for Baylor and Temple right before he left

Then you have to ask yourself, if you’re PSU, do I really want to get into a bidding war with Nebraska for my 4th option. That means you’re gonna pay 1st option prices and try to sell the fanbase on the move. IDK it’s all conjecture as of now, but this is what we do… 🤷‍♂️
I mean, maybe he's Kraft's first option, who knows.

But I think if Rhule wants to be at PSU he'll be there. I don't think he'd drag out a big back and forth.

Rhule can’t really control his facial reactions. It’s easy to read in what he’s thinking or being serious.

It’s the Baptist preacher in him from his dad. He’s very animated when he talks

Media claiming Rhule is the top candidate is such a lazy take.
This is what I am thinking. The news is so fresh that no one knows what is really going on behind closed doors, but they know that Rhule is a Penn State grad with a decent reputation and plenty of high-level experience so he gets elevated to the "favorite" before anyone knows what direction PSU is really going in. Penn State may not have the slightest interest in him for all anyone knows.

1. I don’t see Penn st as a “shoe in” for a “slam dunk” hire. Gonna be tough sledding this year with a lot of big name teams will be competing for a very small number of slam dunk hires.

2. Kraft is the #1 reason it could happen. With a different AD I’d say about 0% chance of happening. With Kraft… definitely not 0%
I wonder how much coaches value NIL/resources that they’ll walk into an environment where their fans quickly turned on a guy who got em close to a national title game last year. You have to be the national title guy to pull em out of 10 win purgatory.

Maybe pedo state gives the next guy a lot more rope than I believe but they could be a lot like #2ndChoice/Wisky, not as low of a floor tho

If you are Kraft and you want Rhule as your top pick, you spend a few weeks leaking names like Urban, Cignetti, Dillingham and whoever else to make it at least look like you are making the effort, then the fanbase will start getting restless and suddenly Rhule looks a lot better.

the fact that Rhule is being mentioned so prominently from the start makes it seem like this is agent-driven

I think in this era any savvy AD has to consider the fan psychology with any move like this. it wasn't that long ago that Greg Schiano was going to be hired at Tennessee and the fan reaction killed the deal.

Realistically Penn states AD isn’t even ready for a HC search. To say from the Oregon loss to today he’s “done his research” and Matt Rhule is the guy is wild.
Even Bill Moos and his checklist wouldn’t have been ready that fast.

If none of these guys knew Franklin was getting fired before Schefter(or whoever tweeted it) they don’t have contacts with knowledge of the situation a few hours after knowing who the top target is.

Penn state fans have been fed up with Franklin for a couple years now because he can never win a big game, to be fair. Similar to Pelini but wayyyy more successful.

Also I don’t think many coaches will care how Franklin was fired.

I agree with you.

Just pointing out that he was largely under the radar at Temple and Baylor so it was pretty easy to do that. And Temple it was obvious he was moving on to a bigger gig anyway.

This is different bc he has proclaimed he wants to retire here. And he's scheduled about 5-8 media hits a week for himself. It'll be harder to keep up the charade for another 2 months than it was at Temple.

Regardless of what happens with Rhule, I think Penn State really fucked up. Outside of luring saban or urban out of retirement (and maybe smart), I don’t see a single coach in the country that guarantees better results than they’ve seen the last few years. It’s a lot harder to win in college football than it was even 5 years ago. If you have a coach that has you in the playoff conversation every year you hold on for dear life these days (even if your star shits the bed and you lose to 2 bad teams).

“He can never win a big game” but won two playoff games last year is a little funny to me.

He’ll have an extension soon won’t have to put up any charade

I agree, and this makes me wonder if there was something else going on behind the scenes

I'm betting that in the next week there will be some really interesting articles citing anonymous sources

I truly hope so. I just don’t factor in his comments made during the season at all.

December 31, 2019;

I plan on that,” Rhule said of returning to Baylor, via Alex Scarborough of ESPN.com. “I certainly think I will be.”

“One thing people don’t realize is coaches, we pick up our families,” Rhule said. “We rip them out of their homes. We rip them out of the places that they are. Sometimes you do that until you get to a point where you find happy. You shouldn’t mess with happy.

He even signed a big extension. Left for the panthers a couple weeks later

What’s the buy out?

Agreed. And again, my BS meter has been going off all day. I mean, we're 2 hrs into this surprise coaching search and there's already an odds-on favorite?? It's just not believable.

But this "make shit up" stuff goes on because it benefits all 3 parties:
  • Agent/coach - potential $$ raise/extension
  • AD - gets a trial run for each name, to see how the fanbase reacts
  • Reporter - get his name out there, gets additional clicks, pretends like he has inside info

If your On3 or CBS or The Athletic, you HAVE to be first with a "hot list candidates" article. It doesn't even matter if it's true or not. You get clicks and in the end it doesn't even matter if the list is accurate or not.
