Bud Elliot hates Nebraska..

definitely highlights how much perception is more important to the coverage of this issue than actual facts.

Reporters “feel” like PSU (and Oregon and USC) are some sort of huge tv draw, when the numbers tell a different story.

There is also some manipulation involved by Disney. Let me explain:

SEC commercial breaks last longer than Big Ten games, roughly 30 seconds longer on average.

This means halftime starts much later than a Big Ten half. So the SEC games draw Big Ten eyeballs for the extra 7 minutes required to equal a viewership point for an hour

There are also less streamers in the South due to technology and poverty. Many streamers are more likely to have two games on at once. Southerners are likely to only watch on traditional over the air TV.

So some person in Ohio may have both the Bama and Penn State games on. Billy Bob in Georgia is only going to watch one game.

All you need to know is in 2021, Nebraska was the 12th most watched team in CFB. And we were 3-9. Only a team with a massive brand value could draw viewers like that when you're 3-9.

Haters will say: "that's bc people were tuning in to see the OTHER team each week!"

Of course - and that's why Rutgers and Maryland finish in top 10 TV ratings every yr (since they play OSU, UM, PSU annually). Oh wait they don't.
