Butler

IMO protection issues seemed to be the biggest culprit.

Either way, I’m not going to get too worked up yet and get a 4 game sample size. 105 yards passing and 4/12 on 3rd down. At end of day, game came down to field goal luck.
I always find it set incessantly funny that 90% of the people that predicted a close three-to-seven point game come out with pitchforks and torches against the coaches and say how garbage they are when it winds up being a……3 point game.

Yet it hasn’t for Rhule for 2+ years
This was actually the first conference game where Rhule has scored 27 or more points and lost.

In 2024 we scored 27+ in 2 conference games and won both (Purdue 28, Wisconsin 44)

In 2023 we scored 27+ in 1 conference game and won it. (Purdue 31)

So it has worked for Rhule. In fact, if we keep scoring 27+ every game we’re gonna go 9-3 or better.

Exactly. If we didn’t promote Butler how many P5 programs are begging for him to be the DC?
Zero is my guess. There’s a reason a dude like him has never had a DC job even though he’s been a successful position coach. But in his defense the DL he inherited is just downright bad and sets you back quite a ways

I like you. Just wanted to point out Nebraska lost today because our tackles weren't good enough.

If they ever become good enough, then we can worry about the DC.

I still think he's auditioning for an NFL DC job. Nebraska is still going to be #1 in pass def efficiency after today.

And the NFL doesn't care about run defense. If Teddy P had knees, Nebraska wins easily.

Did it feel like a 3pt game to you? Didn't to me. Maybe that’s progress?

We probably should’ve got beat by 10-17. They missed a wide open td early. We got the 1 in a million Hail Mary, we were bailed out with the taunting penalty. Dylan made some unbelievable plays while the pocket was collapsing to even keep us in it.

Another 3 point loss and that’s about what it’s supposed to be, but the way our run d was carved up and the way we protected Dylan was abysmal. And that’s not something you can easily hide in the b10.

My concern going into the game was we’d have no ability to regularly contain their run game and they’d march up and down the field on us. I don’t think the defense played that badly honestly. I figured going in that Biff's Butthole Surfers would spring a couple. Some of that is them and some of that is us. Haynes is a great back and they scheme things up. This run against OU looks awfully familiar

Obviously they dialed one up on the q draw. Three of their four third down conversions came on that killer 8 min drive in the 4th (which was their only drive to reach the red zone for the whole game). By and large good D play outside of the major breakdowns. YMMV.

Have a lot more complaints about the OL play.

If anyone could come up with some video of their big runs...I'm pretty certain every one was zone scheme or Q draw....

And they blocked our DL right where they wanted them to be.

We’re in man most of the time and they run routes to clear out the middle and viola.

Great scheme and execution by Biff's Butthole Surfers.

I do have some concerns about the three big runs, but in general the bolded is more bothersome to me.

Two big money O lineman in from the portal, but we look like shit at LT, LG and RT.

I’m amazed at how badly those three spots got manhandled yesterday.

Be careful using common sense around here. The beta males will get triggered fast.

The fact that we were able to move the ball as much as we did given the way our OL played gives me some hope. Also agree that the defense wasn’t *that* bad in retrospect, although we haven’t faced a team with a true passing threat yet.

The other thing I’ll note is that we are way cleaner this year from a penalty/turnover standpoint. This gives me some hope that we’ll see better results against teams with a more even match in talent.

You can find lots of things to blame in a loss, but if your defense gives up 3 explosive TD runs, they had a bad day. There's no way around that.

Very few offenses are going to overcome a team your defense spotted 21 points to on 3 plays, and almost certainly not this one.

Butler sucks and was always a horrible hire. But you will never win a B1G game when you average 1.4 yards per carry
It was 3.8 ypC on actual rushing plays

I think the point, though, is that this was the defensive game plan (i.e., be aggressive and risk getting gashed by long runs) and if we could have cuts the sacks down and converted a few more 3rd downs, it likely would've worked, even if that sounds strange now. A total of 36 pressures (7 sacks, 4 hits, 25 hurries). If we could have cut that by a third and the defense could have played at the same level and we likely we have won.

Biff's Butthole Surfers has pressured the QB 87 times in 4 games - 36 of those against us. I am no expert, but this suggests they were doing a lot of stuff for the first time this year against us.
