I don't feel as good. I thought going in our run defense would be a concern, and yesterday confirmed it. But it was the first game, and they've got a couple weeks to get better. We won't know anything until the Michigan game.

Sure all valid things to look at and understand that we need to clean up.

And we didn’t fold and WON through it all. That says a lot about culture and playing through each play without panic and making a big play (as a team with a winning mentality and culture should) at the end to WIN.

If anyone thinks a game 1 away game versus a P4 opponent doesn’t come with errors, they are irrational.

A team with a ton of new players playing their first offical ball game together gets room for error in my eyes.

What I look for is how did they respond? I saw a team that responded well to every negative, played through that with the right mindset and make the next play.

That is a sign of a winner.
Oh yes, there are plenty of positives to take away from this game. Special teams isn't getting enough run IMO. They have been sooooo bad the last decade, and they arguably were the difference Thursday.

The return game was still weak but the kicking game was a huge improvement
Think about Cincinnati's last drive if they only had to go 75 yards vs 91 yards. Archie was a huge part of that win.

Seriously! Should be getting a bunch more run than they are!!!

So when you looked at our performance on Thursday, but watched other teams this weekend and even last weekend (week 0) of CFB, I'm more confident. Here's why:

  • We controlled the game. Yes, their running game and QB scrambled like fuck, but we controlled the game. We took what they gave us and while we should have scored more points, we held a very good offensive team to 17 points.
  • Special teams didn't lose us the game. They were good.
  • Game management was better. Not great, but a whole lot better than last year.
  • For the most part, a clean game. A few bonehead items like false starts and holdings, but all teams had those issues yesterday.
Ultimately, teams on week 1 have a lot more time to get prepared for their first opponent. And Cincinnati came prepared with a good plan. We took what they gave us. We do have some holes to fill like the defensive line and RB depth, but we found that out on game 1 with game 2 and 3 are warm-ups for the season to get those fixed.

I don’t think we controlled the game as much as you think. This suggests we were extremely lucky to win.
