Then because of them deciding to go for it. It showed DR still has trouble finding open receivers in particularly important spots of the game. Similar to ILL and whatever other games last year. There were 2 wide open receivers for that first down he missed. I thought this is where he would take a step forward this year. But we'll see since this was only game 1.

Those 2 decisions ended up letting them back into the game. So, maybe this needed to happen in hindsight to allow the team to mentally figure out how to win a game like this.

I’d rather we go for it and be aggressive in that situation. As a player I’d want that. I think most fans want that and most of the fans that are bitching about that call right now would have bitched about him punting if he had punted it

Less confident after Nebraska’s first Power-5 opening win in 20+ years? That’s hilarious. Raiola was sharp, Johnson ran for 100, Hartzog iced it with a pick. It’s one game, not a season obituary. Jumping to conclusions after Week 1 is about as smart as bragging about “moral victories.”

Probably true I can only say based on what I think. I thought they should punt it because it is obviously clear Archie can put the pig skin any place he'd like. And then driving 98 yards for TD was less likely

And, I feel better. Won the game with the points I mentioned when we could have easily done the opposite.

Hell, we had a DB get a crucial holding call on what could have been a game winning drive for our opponents and instead of folding, the team and said DB makes a huge play to win the game.

I see that as a big positive and one that makes me more encouraged.

I think a rational, non-knee-jerk reaction would be to balance what you expected and what you see in front of you - not to try to minimize the reality (i.e., the game didn't influence my perspective one way or the other even 1%) in order to keep a pre-conceived notion of the team intact.

I don't think humans are even capable of observing something and not having it influence their opinions of that thing.

if it were a close game against a big ten team late in the season you probably neee to punt that ball

First game of the year though, on ESPN, in Arrowhead Stafium, your team is juiced, you want to build that killer mentality in your team, you’ve got some momentum, I think you go for that every time

How is it "jumping to conclusions" to say you're less confident in the team after watching them play for the first time?

If you're more confident in the team, is that also jumping to a conclusion?

Are we allowed to feel more or less confident after game 2? Game 3?

I do think that false start penalty on the 1 yard line was a huge kick in the nuts in the second quarter. If we score a TD there, I think we are in the driver's seat at that point.

And we didn’t fold and WON through it all. That says a lot about culture and playing through each play without panic and making a big play (as a team with a winning mentality and culture should) at the end to WIN.

If anyone thinks a game 1 away game versus a P4 opponent doesn’t come with errors, they are irrational.

A team with a ton of new players playing their first offical ball game together gets room for error in my eyes.

What I look for is how did they respond? I saw a team that responded well to every negative, played through that with the right mindset and make the next play.

That is a sign of a winner.

I don’t recall saying I was more confident after the win. Feeling less/more confident after one game isn’t analysis, it’s mood swings. Seasons aren’t decided in Week 1

Mistakes and miscues are made in every game. How did they respond? What was their answer? What was their body language?

It’s game number one. I don’t like mistakes. It’s not what happens now, but what happens next?

What is the response? What is the reaction?

I choose to see all of the improvements and especially those that are based in the response.

I see a winner. It may not be playoffs and it’s still a winner after week 1.

I watched ranked teams prior to our game look like hot garbage. Teams that I believe will be good this season.

We weren’t that.

There are completely valid reasons to be more confident.
I've only been going after people who say it's dumb or irrational to feel more or less confident in a team after watching them for the first time (a really dumb position)

I just honestly don't understand the position. I personally don't think I could watch a team play for the first time without having it affect my opinion of the team, even just 1%, one way or the other.

The entire thread got derailed by people saying "it's just week one" as though slightly shifting your assessment of the team after watching them play for the first time is overreacting. Maybe I can do this survey again after we've played all the games and it no longer matters so we can be perfectly rational about it 😂

More confident. It wasn't pretty, but it was a Power 4 opponent. There's a reason you try to start the season with puff games. Cincinnati has some dawgs and their QB is a baller. They definitely wanted to win that game more. Playing a P4 opponent that smacks you in the mouth and winning is a great start...and Cincy could have won that if they didn't go to the air.

Not saying that we are going to the playoffs, but if the boys step it up and stop being soft, we could have a great season.
