1: 95% of the kicking made me happy.

2: The defense was pretty good considering what we lost. We were replacing our entire starting 4 DL (Nash, Ty, Butler, MJ) and we held them to 17 points. Anybody that expected it to look better than that in the first game was fooling themselves. They will get better. Plenty of room to improve. Pretty big positive regardless.

3: Dylan looked really solid. Emmett looked good. Boy do we need them to stay healthy. At least the next two weeks should provide opportunities for the young RBs to get adjusted.

4: Cincy had one successful play and that was just send the QB to run. He'll get hurt and then they won't have anything. Bad season incoming for them.

5: The refs got the calls correct for the most part. No first game nonsense from them.

6: Now we know why Pritchett was called out in the press conference a few days ago. Get it together man. False start on the goal line and then got beat for a sack later. Not good enough.

I think any fan has to be worried about our run defense. I know it’s game one, but I don’t think we have the big bodies to hold up in the BIG run game. We are a middle of the road BIG team talent wise.

I think refs were fine at penalty calls. Spotting the ball was rough, especially in the first half.

Couple huge plays from Hartzog.

Cincy’s defense generally played pretty well and tackled well in the open field. That 3-high ISU D can be a tough nut to crack.

Other than the 4&2 that almost got housed, thought Dylan played really well.

Key and Hunter are upgrades. Really good stuff from Lindenmeyer.

EJ’s vision is elite.

With the defense we’re playing, you need the back 7/8 to tackle better. Getting that cleaned up next couple weeks gets you a W against Michigan.

Send EJ on vacation for 2 weeks. We need young RB to grow up a ton in the next 2 weeks and EJ ready for 25-30 carries a game through Big10 play.

I think on D were just going to have to be reliant on some tricky shit to try and get teams behind the sticks on 2nd down, from there I’d like where we’re at.

Yeah I’m hoping EJ gets 10 carries for 70 yards the next two weeks then rides pine.

An undisputable bright spot is Archie.

Field goal unit looks like it'll be solid.

We protected the ball pretty well - Dylan just had one sketchy throw, & the only times we put it on the turf were a blindside hit & an injury.

If we stay in plus territory on turnovers & special teams stays a strength, that'll be good for a couple Ws by itself.

If EJ is getting 25-30 touches a week through the meat of the season, I don’t think he makes it through the season. Really need a couple of guys to step up and at minimum produce 5 quality touches a piece.

On first down D, it looked to me like the line wasn’t helping the LB’s at all and the LB’s either didn’t pick the right run fit or didn’t execute it correctly, because this didn’t look like a guy getting caught up in the scrum. We just weren’t there. At all. That’s fixable.

Was really expecting to see Watson-Trent shine here. His Georgia Southern film looks like a guy with a nose for the football and a habit of showing up there, on time. Don’t know if he’s having to overthink, not comfortable yet, or being asked to do something else. Limit 1st down runs to less than 5 yards and we’ve got something to work with.

I was thinking watching the game that we may have been so concerned with the QB runs that we kind of lost focus on the RB game, but we didn’t do a good job shutting down either.

I just rewatched some of the game this morning, man I think we are in for a long season with our interior defensive line. Jeaudy looked awful. Was getting beat, not just beat, but manhandled in nearly every 1v1. RVP & Jalen George did not impress me either.

^^This. Hunter might be the best receiver on the team. He appears to be Mr. reliable.

Cinncinati was better than I thought they were. Defensively, they looked the part. They were big and didn't make many mistakes. That cover 3 zone is so tough to play against. There were holes and I think Dylan did a good job at finding them.

He also checked down often(part of the reason his completion percentage was so high) but that's okay going against that style of defense.

I'm not backing down from my concern with the d line, the linebackers also overpursued. Yes, they can all get better but so will our competition.

EJ’s vision is elite? Totally disagree. He missed several big holes. The play in the 3rd Quarter when he stretched it and allowed Corleone to tackle him, if he cuts that up, that was a touchdown. I thought he ran hard, but I thought the vision was a problem last night.

We can’t make a living off 5.8 yards/pass. Still looking for someone to make a big play. Only one play over 20 yards. That’s just brutal. I don’t care what style D they were playing. Once again Jacory had a couple that were close but he didn’t pop them. Story of his career so far.

The complaints about lack of deep ball IMO aren’t recognizing what we were up against. Maybe I'll change my opinion if I rewatch but I saw UC sending an edge rush and playing off to make sure they didn’t get beat deep. So, for a deep ball to work against soft coverage we needed time, but we didn’t have that. What we had was the shallow routes.

For the most part we had our way taking what they gave us. Penalties and sacks took us off the field. Maybe more of a screen game could have gotten them to back off pressure, which could have set up the deep ball. But whatever, we won and pretty regularly moved the ball all game.

P.S. I wasn’t a fan of our empty set, btw. Need to reimagine our action out of empty.

While I get what you are saying, good teams can get what they want against defenses. It isn't all play what they give you.

But I do acknowledge that the context of this was a Thursday night slobberknocker and dialing down the risk profile made sense

Larry there’s nothin better than a good ole slobberknocker on a Thursday nite. During WW2 the German ladies would throw their panties in the streets at us and say “geeve us youre wieners!” while doing patrols

I think Holgs could have figured out a way to take some deep shots if he really wanted to do so. This was all just a strategic choice IMO.

I was watching some of the line play. I didn't like what I saw from what I saw from the interior of the DL. They kept blasting their bodies into OL and didn't hand fight or control the scrimmage which didn't open holes for the LBers.

I think the edge is promising. I liked what I saw from Davis and Nwaneri. Lenhardt disappointed and George shouldn't be an interior guy, but I did like his motor.
