UNC to the SEC?

Sipple-----

Per On3: The Post and Courier’s Scott Hamilton said Friday on The Paul Finebaum Show he heard UNC could have a gentlemen’s pact in place with the SEC. That same person told Hamilton Virginia could also be looking toward the Big Ten.

Inside Carolina initially reported North Carolina could be looking at an ACC exit. Hamilton indicated the Tar Heels could be the top choice for the SEC with Florida State and Clemson vying for the No. 2 spot.

“I actually had a source today tell me that North Carolina has a handshake agreement with the SEC,” Hamilton said. “That same source tells me Virginia has one with the Big Ten ..."

This seemingly has legs. Yes, it's early in the conversation. But there's smoke here.

I really would only buy reporting if they have a very specific story about how said team is getting out of the ACC before 2036.

A bunch of nothing. Look at all the quaifiers and hedges:

Well, if a Tuesday report from Inside Carolina is accurate, North Carolina could be exploring a move away from the ACC to the SEC “perhaps in the near future.”

The University of North Carolina is reportedly among several schools “interested in seeking a potential departure from the ACC” whenever the next round of collegiate realignment happens, sources told Inside Carolina‘s Adam Smith.

So something might happen in the future. Maybe. If certain other things happen. They're maybe potentially interested into looking into see if something can happen. 🙄

Also, learned here that the ACC is up to 18 teams (17 football). Had no idea they were that big.

Yeah, all they need to do is fire Hubert Davis and they become a top team in the conference though. The UNC job would be more attractive than almost any job in the SEC for a coach.
I agree. But in general we really don’t care about basketball. It’s an afterthought.

Virginia and Georgia Tech I bet will be the next two additions. Atlanta is the 7th biggest tv market

I wonder if the Big 10 will pursue Miami over FSU
I would hope the Big Ten takes both FSU and Miami. If they add a couple other teams like GTech and Virginia along with them, that solidifies the south for them, gets them Florida, and gets them another 2 brand name football programs. Personally, I dont mind adding Virginia, GTech, Stanford, or even Cal, but you gotta balance those with legit football programs as well.

Unless the SEC grabs one of them, I cant see a world where Miami and FSU are left out if we are going to 24 team conferences. It would be very fun to play FSU and Miami semi regularly.

Looks like the details of that settlement is that part of the conference money allocation is now based on ratings, and also exit fees are clearly defined:

So 2030 (if not sooner), I'd expect all the teams who can get a B1G/SEC offer to be peacing out. And it'll quickly become worth it for ACC teams to pay the fee & start the clock on getting the higher conference payouts - the difference in payouts could be in the hundreds of millions. Quick back of the napkin math shows the most profitable route is for ACC teams to leave immediately & pay the exit fee, based on the midpoints of the future rev estimates.
