“I had high hopes and was pretty confident in getting picked but at the end of the day I can’t control the outcome,” Carey said. “For me, it was a win-win. Coming back to Nebraska was never a bad option. I love Nebraska and I’m happy for an opportunity to play another year there.”
What Carey learned in the draft process was scouts want at least one trait to stand out in a prospect. Power. Speed. Elite defense. Something they can build around and turn into a differentiator at the next level.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder has a plan for how to improve his stock while helping the Huskers win. Pro teams likely see him at third base or second base, he said, though he’ll stick with shortstop in 2026 after making plays both routine and spectacular in Lincoln.
“I just didn’t have anything in my game that was in the 90th percentile,” Carey said. “I was 50th or 60th percentile in all aspects of my game. I want to focus on power and projecting more as a guy who can hit extra-base hits. And not just doubles and triples, but home runs.”
Similar to pitcher Drew Christo a year ago, Carey had no interest in signing as an undrafted free agent.
“It just felt like if I signed it was almost like a slap in the face,” Carey said. “Like, ‘We’ll sign you but you’re not good enough for us to draft you.’”
Significant return.
Still need another arm or two to replace what the draft snagged.
