Trucks

That's her pretty side, at night.
Geez Dawgsauce, I was humiliated to enter this thread because I have a dated 2012 Sierra that has been paid off for a long while.

But it is a flawless black beauty that only has 136K. I also sold my boat, so why buy a new truck when I don't need one. I'm learning some lessons over the years on impulse buying of things you don't need or probably cannot afford.

Knowing your budget would help, OP. I'm in the same boat with an aging 1/2 ton RAM and have been eyeballing the move up to a 3/4 or even a 1 ton. BUT - in my case - I'm not going to put the cart before the horse this time. I'm going to pick my NEXT camper and size the truck to accommodate the tongue or pin weight based on the camper specs.

I was eyeballing the F-250 with the "Godzilla" gas burner, but a buddy of mine just got one as a work truck a couple of weeks ago and he hates it. He still has his personal F-150 (which he loves), and has driven a variety of Chevy's, GMC's and Ford 1/2 tons over the last decade or so. I pressed him on his preference at a group dinner on Friday night, and he said he'd lean back towards the GMC/Chevy line vs. either his current F-150 or the work F-250. Anecdotal AF, but he and I grew up in the trucking industry together and I trust his opinion here.

What @Boondock_St_Sker is rocking above is what I'm eyeballing. Not sure if I'll go with that AT4 trim package as it really reduces the max payload, but there's no doubt that's a sweet truck. My sticking point is the diesel vs. gas burner. I truly WANT the extra power & torque the diesel delivers (and slightly better fuel mileage on the bigger block versions), but fighting the DEF and the extra expense that comes with them is a YUGE negative. The big gas motor gets decent reviews, but again for me it will come down to the trailer. If I go with a big 5th wheel (which I'm leaning towards), then it's definitely going to be a diesel. Regardless, it will be a newer model year to take advantage of the improved Allison transmissions w/more gears.
I got a diesel. Chevy 2500 HD, LTZ package. Grooving on it so far, but it's real test will come when it drags my camper ... at the speed I WANT to go!

I need to get a new truck myself, havent decided yet. My ego and tiny peepee may demand a 3/4 ton Powerstroke. However, the construction company i work with runs a few crew pickups, and I dont see us ever buying another diesel for the fleet. We recently picked up a nice XLT 3/4 ton with the 7.3 gas, and that thing pulls the skidsteer or enclosed trailer just fine a few times a week. I drive it every now and then and its a decent truck. Fuel mileage tops out at about 12-14. The maintenance and DEF issues on the diesels were starting to kill me. Add in an automatic 10-15k premium for the diesel up front and it doesnt make sense. Of course, the crew takes all their breaks in the pickup with it idling, and modern diesels hate idling. Plugs up the system and we shot several turbos on the 6.7s in part because of that.

The 7.3 Godzilla motors from Ford are hard to beat. Pretty simple old school single overhead cam is nice in a day that’s all computer chips.

I’ve got an ’18 Silverado 2500 LTZ Duramax and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, maybe even shocked at how well it will tow.

I have to remind myself that I still have to stop.

I had a pledge brother in college that used to run the used car department at Beardmore Chevrolet (his college job). I'd call him up whenever I needed a new ride, and Scotty would always ask, "Does it just need to start, steer and stop, or is there ego involved?" Yep, those are the basics. And in my case, there's always ego involved.
