Obviously Bo was mental but it certainly seemed like something extra cracked after that year. If he wins that game, I actually could imagine his demeanor staying relatively "loose" the way it was in his first couple years, maybe even grown comfortable in his own skin enough to enjoy his time here, instead of going increasingly off the deep end with paranoia and rage issues from 2010 on. Not to mention just the credibility and hype that could've helped recruiting take off.
HAVING SAID THAT, there's an equal chance that he would've gotten even more high on his own supply and torpedoed at some point. Who knows.
I still think the Bo era was fascinating for all the what-ifs and drama, and also how close it always felt to either finally getting over the hump, or totally falling apart. The fact that we won 9-10 games every single year despite the constant rollercoaster feeling during that time is honestly wild now that I look back. It sure was a lot more exciting than anything we've dealt with since then.

whatever caused The Simulation to hit us so damned hard and for so long. Whether it’s the “1 second” or Harvey Perlman, Osborne retiring……. Whichever one triggered it. Hopefully we passed it on to Michigan State last week when their RF dropped the ball.

I think the biggest "what if" with Pelini is what if Sanders and Carl were able to stay with him. I think Marvin and Carl kept Bo sane and productive, Bo went downhill after they left and were replaced with yes men.

Callahan probably would have been the coach for awhile had he listened to anyone and fired Cosgrove. Having time removed from the Callahan era, he actually would have had a lot of success if he could have hired a good DC maybe like Bo.
What if Solich took the Minnesota job in the 90s. Then he could have gotten some seasoning/proven if he was a good coach or Osborne stayed longer and we ended up with a different head coach.

I looked it up once, if TO coached as long as Joe Paterno he would have retired in like 2021. I want to live in that alternate reality.

I don't think he would have had any more success with a better DC or great recruiting classes. He was a terrible leader and the program cratered in his 4th year because of it. Besides him sticking with a bad DC, he was an inept game manager and his offenses went to sleep in big games.
He's a great assistant but not everyone can assume the head job. He's never been offered a HC position since the NU and Oakland debacles for good reason.
Callahan era is white washed because of recruiting. He was like 0-25 or something crazy like that when losing at halftime.
If he got more time maybe he would have had marginal success, but I don't think we were missing out on a national title winning coach. Best thing Callahan did was setup Bo for success with his recruiting.

We played an incredibly difficult schedule in 2007 and gave up an astronomical amount of points. In all of his flaws, he generally had a pretty good offense in a time when a lot of teams were moving towards a pass heavy offense. He was too loyal to cosgrove and it’s a lot easier to say he is an inept game manager almost 20 years later.

We did talk to Urban while he was at Utah but he wanted a zero $ buy out of Notre Dame or Ohio state came calling and my hunch is we didn’t want our program minimalized like that by the HC’s contract so moved on. Then he got the UF job after that.
The BC conversation is full of opinions and I’ve got some too. I believe his downfall was inline with what FSU had happened this year. His 06 team was still underskilled but had good leadership. And it was leadership he recruited and put in place, and a team that wound up 9-3 before going to the Big XII championship and then playing Auburn in the bowl. So, the track record is there he could do it. The 07 team had none of that. The Juco players he relied on in 04 and 05 to come in and set the tone had graduated, there was the internal strife around Keller vs Ganz, and the team just didn’t care anymore. Perhaps, had he not gone so deep in the Juco space to fill out his team, and he built leadership early on with HS players, the rebuild would have been slower, yet more stable. IIRC he pivoted to much fewer Juco players in 06 and where 07 was before falling apart, which fueled the leadership gap.
BC lost the team and that’s on him. But he also saw that he had no support from the admin. Coz would have found a new home if BC had been supported. But the writing was on the wall, so BC wasn’t going to throw anyone under the bus… he knew he was getting fired.
