Around our water cooler at work we've long said that in Conference Realignment we are eventually going to go backwards as we go forwards...i.e. we are going to have a mega-conference that's broken into pods that return us back to old rivalries.

Today around that water cooler a fun idea was thrown out - name 2 teams, we unanimously said Notre Dame and Pitt, that you would add to the B1G to get to 20 and then split back into 2 divisions. The Original B1G vs the New B1G

Original
Ohio St
Michigan
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Cockeye
Indiana
Purdue
Illinois
Northwestern

New
Penn St
Notre Dame
Oregon
USC
UCLA
Washington
Nebraska
PItt
Maryland
Rutgers

Then the question became: Which side would you rather be in? If not Notre Dame and Pitt, who would you add?

I informed them that we actually belong in the new SEC so we can play Texas, Oklahoma, Mizzou and A&M again - back where we feel at home. With an annual non-con against Colorado.

I'd add 6 and go to four 6 team pods.

East

Maryland
Rutgers
Penn St
Notre Dame
Boston College
Virginia

Great Lakes

Ohio St
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Purdue
Northwestern

Midwest

Wisconsin
Minnesota
Cockeye
Illinois
Nebraska
Kansas

West

Oregon
USC
UCLA
Washington
Stanford
Arizona

I just don't see a 2 ten team division setup working very well with a nine game schedule. 4 five team pods would work, rotating the other pods onto the schedule. Maybe something like this:

East

Maryland
Rutgers
Penn St
Notre Dame
Purdue

Great Lakes

Ohio St
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Northwestern

Midwest

Wisconsin
Minnesota
Cockeye
Illinois
Nebraska

West

Oregon
USC
UCLA
Washington
Arizona

I think we are at a tipping point right now. Can't really grow until a 4 team playoff for the conference title is allowed. Just too big. I think eventually that will happen in conjunction with the ACC breaking up and the B1G/SEC reworking the playoffs to their advantage and probable exclusivity. Something like a 4 team B1G playoff on Fox and a 4 team SEC playoff on ESPN, with the winners meeting for the National Title.
